Post WW2 japan, because the old culture failed, was reforged. This period where old norms died in favor of modernization created a boom of innovation, creativity, and economic progress. The old generation had to face the fact that they failed, so they stood aside -- and the next generation took control and reforged the country.

Now, Japan is stagnant because the generation that forged the country is refusing to cede control so that it can adapt to the 21st century. The rigid social structure reinforces this.

South Korea is still in its reforging period. And because of how socially rigid it is you will begin to see a South Korean "Lost Decade" starting any time now. SK will be the new, stuck, Japan in 10 years.
