I've been looking into how supposed "fake news" is quantified as part of a summer research project. The majority of algorithms rely on lists of (((fake news sites))) compiled by some authority (like snopes in the case of facebook). Others attempt to parse the site content looking for the percentage of opinion, which is again referenced to things that are "known true", verified by some authority, subjectively in most cases.

So if I say the earth is round on Infowars, it will be dismissed as "fake news" as Infowars has been deemed a "fake news" site.

There is some work in AI neural networks, however it is a long way off and in no way a accurate predictor of the truthfulness of any given text.

The problem is, as it has always been, with natural language processing. How can a computer read and interpret human language, in all its ambiguity, reliably.

So essentially what we have now is a program that parses text on a website, extracts the topic and stance (topic: jfk killed by cia. stance: true), determines if any "reliable" site has come to the same conclusion, check the target sites (((reliability score))), and issue a conclusion.

TL:DR ironically, by subjectively choosing what information is fake, fake news detection systems are, in and of themselves, fake news
