The US had it's own scientists comparable to those in European academia by the late 19th century with the Americans having a prime expertise on practical inventions (rubber, morse, reaper) though still second rate to UK, France, Germany, and Russia in the advanced theoretical stuff. Due to a combination of political factors, large government resources, R&D relationship between academia/feds/industry, and escaped European scientists did American science became 1st rate after WW2. It's sad though that the US still punches below its potential in this regard with inefficient costs and the most awful (and expensive) K-12 system in developed world, and I worry what the future has for the US in this.
