I wish the US was settled a couple hundred years earlier, or at the very least we had maintained our colonial-era structures better. This castle used to be robber baron's residence and following that, a state prison. One of those prisoners was the law scholar Hugo Grotius, most famous for laying the basis for maritime law. He escaped by hiding in a book chest which was changed every week.

Het blijft zeker een enorm verlies. Ik wil het niet goed praten, maar we mogen blij zijn dan de oudere steden van Zuid-holland, zoals Delft, Den Haag, Leiden, Dordrecht en Gouda redelijk ongedeerd zijn gebleven. In Rotterdam waren er relatief weinig 17de eeuwse gebouwen aan het begin van vorige eeuw te vinden (onder andere vanwege de sloopwoede in de 19de eeuw en het geringe beland van de stad in voorgaande eeuwen ) De meest prestigieuze straten was naar mijn mening vooral de Nieuwehaven en de nieuwere Coolsingel. Toch mis ik de Delftsche Poort, de marinierskazerne, het burgerweeshuis, de schouwburg en de Passage. Wellicht dat een paar van deze gebouwen ooit nog gereconstrueerd kunnen worden.

question for Brits, older New England homes are proportionally very similar to famous Tudor-era construction, but they never expose their timber-framing, they're covered in clapboard siding. At least no remaining examples. This could be a climatic adaption, but I don't know know what comparable 17th century structures in Norfolk look like.

Ja, das waar, die Rotterdamse uniekheid blijft zo wel bewaard. Maar die hoogbouw is toch wel een beetje aan het doordringen in de rest van Nederland, maar voorlopig valt het nog mee. Toch vind ik het verlies van de oude verhoogde spoorbaan die recht door het centrum liep wel erg jammer. Zag er wel goed uit.

I've grown up around historic preservation and most discerning Americans would be appalled at the amount of stuff we've torn down or let decay. The Victorian era absolutely destroyed a good segment of our colonial-era structures, some of which haven't even been properly recorded. Obviously these were mostly houses, shops, and some churches and wouldn't be amazing compared to the castles being posted but it was still ours, and now it's gone forever

Het probleem met het Schielandshuis is niet zozeer het gebrek aan monumenten in de omgeving, maar eerder de mislukte connectie met de omgeving. De gebouwen rond het Schielandshuis zijn van een andere soort architectuur en hoogte die elk als een eiland zich rond de Korte Hoogstraat bevinden. Het Schielandshuis hoort respect af te dwingen, maar door zijn geringe omvang valt deze in het nier bij de omgeving. Ditzelfde geldt ook voor de Laurenskerk. Een goede oplossing hiervoor zou de bouw van moderne grachtenpanden zijn, die voor aansluiting zullen zorgen op de rest van de omgeving. We hebben structuur en dichtheid in de stad nodig, niet weer het zoveelste architectonische wonder.
