I married a Russian woman. There was a lot of bureaucracy and took several years to get a residency permit (i.e. Green card ) this is good for 5 years and must be reapplied for and. Is there is a language/culture/laws test requirement.

It took me a couple years of total immersion to speak the language well and 6 years after that to be more fluent.

I only have Russian friends and pretty much act Russian. My children are bilingual though which is pretty beneficial for them.

I work at a language school so my coworkers are pretty open to forgieners so I haven't had problems on that front.

My situation is unique to me, so I can't really recommend it to others in the same way I did it, I moved with my gf/wife so I had an infrastructure already in place to help me settle in

But ultimately integration only happens if you settle with a native and have kids.

This is what I observe with foreigners who come to Netherlands.

Also different people have different language aptitude. Hell there are quite a lot of Dutch, even youngsters, who speak terrible to almost no English in spite of what everyone thinks of this country.
