Red pill me on why gaming 15 hours a day is bad. I need more reasons than just "it's unhealthy" or "it's unproductive". The only reason I can think of is that it's taken a toll on my physical health by making me lose my desire to eat. I also have a job and only work part time, and make just enough to pay rent, internet, get a bit of food, and add one game a month to my collection.

>>
>>129186860
Sort yourself out

>>
Because eventually you will get tired of chasing the dragon of Fun. Maybe not in a year, but maybe in 5. And you will realize that you have completely wasted years of your life doing nothing, learning nothing except for games. And all that experience is only valuable to those who sell you games. It's not valuable for any employer, it's not valuable to a mate, it's not valuable for yourself.

When you eventually loose your job, since no job is forever you'll be wishing you learned something, anything that has acutal value.

Even stupid hobbies can grow into basic jobs or careers.
Videa only leads to depression.

Bro. I would treat it as any other addiction. Go online for AA therapy and any advice they give for alcohol treat exactly the same just replace alcohol with games- i.e. phased withdrawal, replacement etc.

Gaming pretty much lights up the reward centres of the brain like any other wining/drug does: you need to understand this. That makes it a legit addiction. Gaming is equivalent to a drug to your brain.

t. Had same problem a while back

I've started to get tired of games, I felt so disgusted with Batman Arkham Knight that I sold my PS4. I really want Tekken 7 now though since that's a series that's been a part of my life but I'm better without it. I still sometimes play steam or battlenet games on my laptop but it never goes over an hour a day.
Just fill your life with other more productive and fun shit, you'll notice how empty gaming is. It started feeling like a chore to me.
>>
>>129186860
its escapism, you are trying to keep away from things you need to deal with and/or things that you know are good for you in the long run and/or hiding from things that could potentially hurt your feels.

if you don't address issues the gaming addiction will fade out because boredom, but it will be replaced by something else until you step out of your safespace.

its up to you, nobody cares but you.
>>
>>129186860
asking this on a board where people probably spend up to 15 hours just shitposting political memes is not really a good idea

I recently got so addicted to a certain game that for the last 2 years I played it for about 60 hours a week. I went pro, one of the top players in the country. I had to get out though as it was damaging me to be obsessing about this game and living vicariously through a fucking character on a screen.

There's nothing wrong with games in moderation or with friends, but if you're addicted like you clearly are then you need to stop and assess shit. I really urge anyone who thinks they might be addicted to take a break for a week and see how you feel afterwards.

this advice is good and should apply to any hobby or pastime. taking a break from an activity gives you renewed enjoyment with it afterwards i find.

i wonder how people become so involved in any one activity that heavily-for me i find most things boring to repeat every day or every time i have spare time. i suppose without onsession of a task we would lack all kinds of great artists though as obsession is usually associated with high complexity or quality results

My opinion has always been that if you can sustain yourself while doing it, by working and earning your own cash and that's sustainable, then whatever...it's your choice.

It may however be indicative of other problems like anxiety, depression, lack of motivation, being anti-social or a number of other things. Those things are typically not good to have and can be fixed with the right therapy or change in behaviour.

Was laid off for 45 days. Gamed enough to break it. Path of exile.
It hit me when I was grinding. It was like work, trading items/currency. Irl tho it meant nothing.

The more addictions you can cut out the more you can transmute that energy into productivity.

This.

I'm an oldfag and I eventually managed to get out of it, have a stable career, but I struggled and I've wondered many times why I didn't put the best years of my life to best use.

The psychological way it affects you is also very scary. Vidya are a very advanced cognitive-behavioral model of the global consumerist scheme and only the redpill (the understanding that vidya is just part of the (((mind-control matrix)))) can save you. It leads to failure and depression.

I'm out, I live a happy life, I'm invested in politics and I have a wife. But I'm pushing 40 and I still fantasize about going back to the dreamworld™.

How old are you? I'm 23 and can't play anymore. I have Thief Gold installed on my computer, which I always wanted to play, but I did a few level and can't be bothered with it anymore. Guess you just need to wait to grow out of it.

Tho in my case the fact that I didn't have a laptop for 2 years and just didn't play any games because of that might have been a factor.

Everyone here is being surprisingly supportive for a /pol/ thread. See I've noticed that games have basically become a chore, too. None of them are fun, and it's like I'm just playing to get my fix (hence my realisation that it's a problem). But for fucks sake I made the idiot decision after high school to skip college/uni because I thought it was a better idea to get a job and try to make a living off Twitch streaming. Ended up in the homeless shelter situation because I couldn't afford rent since I was calling in sick to work too much, and now that I have my own place again I'm falling back into the same routine. Gonna try and hit the gym though. Maybe that'll be a better use for my 14.99 instead of a fucking MMO subscription. And shit I thought the whole gaming being a scheme to control the populace belief was just me.
>>
>>129191956
Gym seems a nice start.
Just find other things to do which you are also interested in but never bothered/were to afraid to do.
As somebody who loves games (over 350 on steam alone) even I started getting bored of games. Mainly because most games that come out nowadays are really only things we have played before.
And, even though you might not like it, if you don't have enough money for the things you wanna do try to work more.

>>129186860
How fucking much are you getting paid to afford all of that with just a part time job?

Also you are living a virtual reality. Theres a big world out there with lots of things to experience, but you choose to play some video jew all day long in a dark room instead.

Invest in an arcade quality mat and play stepmania.

That or a pair of dumbbells. It takes almost zero time to do a dumbell routine. You can do full sets during champion select/load times.

Just know that you will gain no job skills from video games. This isn't a problem if you can properly manage your money and live in a city with cheap rent.
>>
>>129186860
>I need more reasons than just "it's unhealthy" or "it's unproductive".

OK so being poor forever or dying early are not good enough reasons for you? Neck yourself mate
>>
Work full time, pick up another hobby you maybe liked as a kid, maybe sports or an instrument. Gaming is barely considerd a hobby as much as watching movies are. They're fun, but nowhere as rewarding as sports/music. Reading is also good. Just try to slowly reduce gaming. And when time comes you'll realize most games are garbage anyway.
>>
>>129191876

Most people will not have memories from when they were young to share or talk about.

The only stories my grandfather ever had were war stories and stuff about the lions club. (Charity/local community group he joined when he was older).

People dont remember stuff. It's why we take photos and marvel at how things looked. We were all there, and they were shining moments in our life, but we couldn't recall any of it without being prompted.
>>
I randomly will get caught up in games, where I will put in like 8 hours a day into a game for a few weeks, then I get bored and don't play anything for awhile, then get bored and do it again.

When overwatch first came out I was staying up late playing the shit out of it. Civ 5 will waste days of my life randomly, then recently Xcom (the original one) sucked away like 80 hours over a two week span. Terraria, skyrim, and CS:GO are repeat offenders too.

While I could have spent that time cleaning the house or not putting off paying a bill or selling something, I still do well in school and work. Still, it shouldn't take as much time out of my life as it does. I am trying my best to not play the video jew more than an hour or so at most.
>>
>>129192954
What's a good dumbbell routine? I have 55lb adjustable dumbbells (from 5lbs to 55lbs) but I can already bench and squat them without much effort. The only thing they seem good for is arm exercises.
>>
>>129191956
>Gonna try and hit the gym though. Maybe that'll be a better use for my 14.99 instead of a fucking MMO subscription.
I say skip the gym and start investing in equipment to work out. You can cut into your game time with working out.
Buy some dumbells and a curl bar. They're cheap for a set if each.
Most of the sets come with an instruction manual.
You can find everything on youtube that you're not sure of.
Buy a bench in a few weeks and add that to your routine.
Or keep an eye on Craigslist for someone tossing one out.
A good hour workout for 30 minutes a day starting will get you on the road to getting in shape.
In 3 or so months you'll be blowing through an hour routine no prob.
Just toss out an hour of gaming for your bench. You can have both easily.
Add a cardio routine for your off days.
Get a bike somehow and start putting miles on it.
Go hiking.
Go swimming.
Do whatever it is that you need to do.
Hell do all of them and get a variety.
Also start taking multivitamins every day.

As someone who played at the vdry highest levels of 1.6, EQ and WoW I have intimate knowledge on this subject (american on vacation dont mind flag, London is beautiful.) Ablut seven years ago at age 25 I dropped mmos finally and got a career in IT. I made a lot of money for someone that works inside someones elses company. I will get my own later. I marred a very smart, pretty asian too. You can have all of this, I guarantee it.

You have to see it all for what it is. You are literally doing absolutely nothing ahen playing a game. You might as well be staring at a wall. I still play, I use it as a stress relief and recreational but for a addict, as I was, do not play anything you can not instantly put down and walk away from. For the first few years do not play a single thing. Just focus on yourself, not your pixel avatar. Then when you go to play a game much later youll find it very boring unless its something that really gets those dendrites going.

Go to work. Study hard. I suggest IT certs if you have already fucked up your life. I did networking. Depending on how smart you are you will move fast with certs and studying hou can make a lot of money. Exercise too, your body will thank you. Regiment. If your onlinr buddies were ever cool with you, they will cheer you on, as what happened with my case.

Find another outlet through which you can reexpress your gaming addiction. Playing music or drawing, or anything really, and it'll help you find a deeper appreciation for life.

Vidya ain't bad in itself, but like all things, it can consume your life.

The best way to reorient yourself would be to ask yourself "what did I do today?" That's how I dropped MOBAs because goddamn they are THE biggest waste of time on this planet.

Actually I'd recommend gym.
That's what I did. It's more motivating to go do it if it's costing you something per month. Also it's good to work out around other people since you can see their form cam spot you etc. And good weights are expensive. If you want to do strong lifts 5x5 you need a good bar and bench and rack. Shit adds up quickly. The 15 or 20 a month is much better then the hassle of creating a home gym. At least at the start.

I tried this, except for a day, instead of playing 15 hours, only 3, in the evening.
It was so hard. I've never done anything else. I read and read but still had this craving for the computer. in the end I was just going round and round. I limited myself to one game (PC), I have a PS4 but rarely touch it. I can't play for more than an hour without feeling bored, and launching another game because I have nothing to do between this and this website.

>>129186860
I stay semi-current with the gaming world due to my interest in technology, but as soon as the 10-15 min mark hits nowadays, I start thinking "I got other shit to do". I think we Men have an innate need to "build" things. You can fulfill that need by building in a virtual environment or the real one. The real one will pay off exponentially more. Find a hobby you have interest in and consume yourself with it.
>>
>>129186860
As long as you have enough time and money for your life, health, food, hygiene and hobbies, it's okay to play 15 hours in a day. And it's better, than being in social networks/doing drugs/etc.

Real life ain't shit, you just ain't playing it right. If all you do is wageslave get a better job. There's a endless amount of possibilities in life. Saying why bother limits it to a shit subset. You got to go out and find the cool shit, can't just be a pessimistic shit head and expect anything other then shit.

If you want something to do look at the working vacations in Australia. You'll make more money in a week doing simple labor jobs then you wageslave job. Then when you get back use what you've earned to improve your life. Get a better job and perhaps attract a mate.

Nah man, I've been playing games for my whole life, basically addicted.
Look at any fucking game, they are so fucking simple using psychological hooks. In most games you can't unlock new items, you gamble for them.
The most other games are just games where you repeat actions in order for numbers to just increase.

>plays games 15 hours a day
>works part time. Essentially you play almost constantly when you're not working if you play 15 hours a day.
Dude your social life and practical things in your house/flat must be utter shit with that kind of stuff.
It also seems like you've essentially setup your life to play as much as you possibly can.
Every skill you make in video games (except maybe those requiring leadership and organization which is a meta part either way) is essentially useless in real life.
In those 15 hours a day you could have learned so many skills, and attained so much new knowledge etc. met so many new people and having so many potential opportunities open up for you, that you are crippling yourself tremendously by doing this. And starting a family? Nope. A woman doesn't want to start a family with an adult child. And what of exercize? You have no time to do that or do sports or similar whatsoever with that kind of situation.

Vidya is fine but if you can't limit it to a few hours a week or something or in some cases a bit more if it's really a hobby for you, but if it gets more than that, you should stay the fuck away from it because it then becomes extremely damaging for your life.
And unless you are making money off doing it like some popular streamer or similar. Nobody over the age of say 25 should be playing vidya whatsoever and it's mostly for kids under 18. And even then parents need to restrict the fuck out of it so that they do their homework and everything FIRST including making sure they do sports and other stuff.

Don't play that much vidya, you're going to ruin your life and future opportunities are going to become increasingly tiny and you're going to get old fat ugly weird and lonely before you know it. Stop doing it say yes to life instead.

It loses the fun aspect over time and almost becomes an unpaid job. I understand the need for a vent, escape, etc, but it can easily cross the obsession line with false achievement fulfillment. It's a synthetic substitute for success with little consequence for failure. Lots of artificial gain for zero repercussions.
>Sim anything
A literal simulation with no investment into the build up, just the playing out of the critical part of a fictional life, the customisable character is the deepest hook to drag you into the simulation because it is your avatar that is accomplishing everything on your behalf with no involvement beyond getting your nose arc right on the character. Think porn, all the sensations and chemical reactions are there, but the other human is a 2d video simulation. You can never have children or a family as a result of using porn, all the pleasure, none of the work, none of the legacy or reward of it's original purpose.

40 to 50 hour work weeks and play video games and smoke weed in my free time.
If you like video games just make sure you can turn that into a skill somehow.

>The last enjoyable game I played was Diablo 2
Really, running through the same levels at different difficulties over and over again in hope of epic loot which makes it easier and no real accomplishment other than that but a massive waste of time?

Diablo II was the original heroinware. And they've just gotten more sophisticated from thereon using the same recipy so that it almost becomes a job to play them. A job in which you don't get paid, but pay a game company to work in a digital world in which months or years of effort is completely gone by the flip of a switch.

People who don't want to mess up their lives and don't have some medical problems or mental problems where they can't work don't get involved in those games, and those that do can end up with the aforementioned like depression because of all the shit they missed out by wasting their time on this bullshit.

Thats the problem with most gamers, and im only taking about PC gamers here- They only care about winning to make themselves feel better.

If you occasionally play strategy games in order to challenge your mind and think about things in a different way, its an entirely different thing.

Stop playing competitive shooting games and start playing strategy/engineering/puzzle games. They will actually help you be a more rounded person, unlike modern AAA games.

>diablo II
>role playing
Yeah falling for the heroinkike and running around the same levels fighting the same bosses 320139123012 times with the main variation being
>oh epic loot now i can kick even more ass look how awesome i am, follow me if you just beat the game 1239812 times
>you too will get this very cool item so you can do the same as me.
Rather not.

Vidya is fun for NEW experiences that can expand your horizon, when games become too repetitive or requires you to spend MUCH time to even accomplish basic thing or similar most people get bored and realize it's not cost/benefit efficient whatsoever, but that's where the addictive people fall right into the trap and get consumed by those games. Hence is why it's called heroinware because of how it starst to interfere with the persons normal life.

There are two games that a person with an addictive personality needs to stay away from. Very repetitive games like first person shooters where they get hooked on constantly honing their skills to do it slightly better than everybody else, skills which are ofcourse completely irellevant and in a real life scenario with a real life skill this would otherwise be a good thing but since it's a fictitious reality/situation it's detrimental that this kicks in.

Games that are deliberately setup so every task is so incredibly time consuming that they guarantee you playing a certain amount of hours or not at all whilst earning money off you for doing so. Where the addictive personality gets hooked by it's desire to complete the task and the potential reward eventhough it's meaningless to their real life and few even care if they did it or not.

If you stay away from those kinds of games or be EXTREMELY careful when encountering such a game i think most people even people with addictive personalities will be just fine.
>>
>>129186860
Wasted potential. There is a word called neuroplactisity. Go look this up. Youth is an opportunity to achieve intelligence that is relevant in adult life. Gaming often has little to offer in personal development any more. It is a frequent occurrence for me to yell up the stairs at my nephew, "Knock off the Xbox mouth!". Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like less and less games are adding to useful personal development.
>>
>>129200937
Dark souls 1 really had that late 90's feel of quality imo. The games after that were shit.

Furthermore, I'm not completely hateful towards gaming. If that is your Friday night beer league with coworkers and friends (real life). I see no problems.

(cont)
In essence if you see what types of games the addictive personalities fall for that will dedicate 15 hours of gameplay time to do them, it's tasks that would be good in a real life scenario, that kicks in in a fictitious scenario.

a) addicted to constantly honing a specific skill to be insanely good at it
b) desire to complete the task they are given no matter what. (yeah yeah i'm coming just gotta get this fucking shit done!)

If this kind of discipline and work ethic was applied in a real life situation these people would be fucking workhorses but since the psychological triggers kick in in a virtual reality situation none of what they do fucking matters. So they just end up like fat and lonely gamers playing 15 hours a day like the OP. It's fucking tragic.
>>
>>129186860
It's merely achievement porn within such a restricted confine that bots can do it better and the whole genre seems as though it was designed to produce followers that feel like they are leaders. Status is where ever you think it is though and you will continue to do it for ever because you have no self-control.
>>
>>129186860
Its literally as easy as just stopping. I used to play waaaaay too many games too. I failed classes, missed work, skipped social functions, fuck one time I even skipped going to a party with a girl I KNEW would fuck me just to meet up with my tribe and go on a raid on ARK.

so I just formatted my gaming rig, sold it, sold all my consoles, and gave away all my games. I bought a weak-sauce laptop that can basically just send emails and write word documents.

You go through withdrawal, ignore it. Cold turkey. When I get feeling the compulsion to play any game I go for a run, hit the gym, or read a book.

I also cut out fapping too. Im 25, I dont gotta be jerkin off 3 times a day like a frustrated 15 year old anymore. It made sex way better because now instead of comparing every encounter to porn im just enjoying the sex.

Ya gotta admit electronic media is an addiction and treat it just like a heroin fixation or alcoholism. Cold turkey, no compromise, no excuses, just run away.

I dont even permit myself to have a casual modern warfare session at my buddies places cuz I know I will imiediatley begin obsessing over getting a new console or gaming rig and will just end up back where I started in an endless cycle of masturbation, junk food, oversleeping, and antisocial reclusiveness.

Im not going back to that. Not ever. My l8fe is good now, im getting married, Im getting ready to buy a house, I got a dog.
Im not giving it up for pornhub and MMORPGs.

The positives of gaming aren't being recognized in this thread.

I have no doubt it sharpens mental faculties, and RPGs can have as rich of plots as the best novels. It just shouldn't be the center of your life. Career/family/friends/relationships/personal development should be.

Then on the other hand, it's a good opiate for the truly hopeless 300 lb beta autists out there. It's better than shooting up heroine, drinking all day, and watching tv.
>>
15 hours a day might be over doing it, but when i was an ignorant blissful useless idiot (stay at home daddy) i was incredible unhappy and played video games ALL DAY. Got rid of the parasite that had spawned two more blood suckers, now i barely ever play video games anymore. Your gonna need to change up something in your life. Agreed. People will spend 18 hours killing the same boss over and over and over for the chance to get a gun with +3% damage so they can kill the same boss over and over faster.

If they spent just 90 minutes a night studying a language or practising an instrument or pursuing a skill theyd be fuckin experts in 18 months, but nobody fuckin does that. The vast resivoir of wasted man hours sucked up by heroinware is fuckin staggering.

Games are also good for keeping the weight off. When you're bored and having nothing to do, you are more likely to eat something just to fill that void.

I know when I got rid of all my gaming habits, I gained a good 15 lbs and had to conscientiously start cutting to get back down.

Sometimes I think about getting back into gaming just because it fills that little bit of void in your life, but eh

I have a friend who is just like you.

We are a group of 5 friends.

While everyone was working or studying, he was playing vidya. That was 3 years ago.

Now, everyone has a job, a family and a normal life. We all make plans for the future and are advancing our careers.

Not him though, he only got some playstation trophies and steam achievements out of his last 3 years. He is still at square one of his life, he hasn't advanced anything at all.

We have whole family barbecues at one of our places from times to times. He comes alone from his mother's.

Take that as you like.

Nail on the head, I played some games professionally and used to make some money on the side to justify spending 90% of my time while awake on the pc but damn I'm just thinking of all the shit I could have done in those 4 years. Some people can just stop while for others you need to just keep continuing your lifestyle until you eventually just get bored and fed up. Sadly I fell into the latter. Being into vidyia =/= being a fat neckbeard with no life. You are into vidya BECAUSE you are a fat neckbeard, not because vidya turned you into one.

Over the past year, I'd barely touched any fucking games despite how many I have.
When you're in an overabundance, it wears on you after a while.
The only exceptions to this recently would have been P5 and Zelda. I'd finished em all about a month ago, and haven't really touched any games since.

Before that and even now, the stress and depression of not even being able to enjoy the only thing I'd consistently been able to do well and communicate with to people, more and more people around me had started to catch up on the 'Young Woke Person of Political thinks' and in order to cope with that, reading became a kind of replacement addiction.

Philosophy, economics, business, history and psychology kept me hooked from paged to page (or mp3 to mp3)
While I wouldn't be as arrogant to say I'm one who truly sees at last and knows all better, I can at least engage with people a little better, and I even communicate with people twice my age even better than my own.
Even playing games had a new spice to it in some small ways.

I'm pretty motivated to not necessarily just get a job for money and living, but to assist an employer in actually making some valuable input towards the business that is their current lifes work. To know I am at least that much more than just a hand to serve and clean, motivates me to look forward to the shit I thought I used to dread.

Granted a lot of people my age outside of the vidya and meme shouting sphere hate my guts on anything more than surface level interactions.

How can you even have any questions about why it's a bad thing? You get about 75 years on this earth. The first 18, you're a retarded kid. The last 15, you're a crippled old man. That means you have 42 good years to live. And you want to burn three or four of them doing something that doesn't even exist?

But it's worse. Because your window to have kids basically closes forever by the time you hit 40... along with your chance to build professional contacts and experience + social skills.

But the WORST part by far is that you only have one chance to be young. You only have ONE gust of youthful exuberance and tenacity. And, when you hit 35-40 as a poor, socially-anxious, marginalized loser and realize (for the first time in your life) that you'll be dead before you know it and it's too late to do much to change things, than you'll understand.

People think that they can ALWAYS make a drastic u-turn in life, and just change things whenever they feel like it. But that's not really true. Your age is very much tied to your ability to make meaningful changes. And the longer you go, the more windows just close forever.
>>
