Hitler was not paranoid about the Soviet Union. They had the largest military in Europe (to which even Hitler underestimated their size) and were expanding. They had already attacked Finland and were encroaching on Romania's oilfields, to which Germany relied on and could not have defended if the Soviets invaded. The Soviets fully intended on bringing communism to all of Europe, Barbarossa was a preemptive strike.

Why do people think that Stalin, who was annexing his neighbors and slaughtering anyone who resisted them or didn't fit the communist utopia, wasn't going to invade Europe? They had already tried to invade Western Europe once in the 1920's and were stopped by Poland.
Not to mention Communism's rapid expansion eastwards after the war. Communist expansion was the entire reason the Cold War existed in the first place.

One only needs to look at the Red Army's size before Barbarossa, how they were stockpiling ammunition on the borders with Germany and building new airfields. Their tanks (like the KV-2 and BT-7) were suited for urban warfare in West European cities, and according to POW's the Russians were training only for an offensive war. This would make sense as the Red Army's defensive abilities were horrendous and resulted in the total rout of their forces, the destruction of tens of thousands of equipment, aircraft and tanks, and the capture of millions of men.

Stalin fully intended on invading Western Europe after (from what he hoped) Germany and Britain would exhaust themselves fighting one another.

No. The US military was routinely harassing merchant ships travelling to and from Japan. That's why they had such a large navy out there.

This was a breaking of international law as trade ships weren't allowed to pass into Japan. The exact same thing was happening to Germany too even though the Germans wouldn't do the same to the UK.

Except Communism and National Socialism despised one another as ideologies and could not have co-existed. Both Hitler and Stalin knew when they made their pact in 1939 that they would eventually be at war; Stalin used it to buy time expected war to occur later than it actually did. That's why he had a nervous breakdown and locked himself in his room for a week after Barbarossa began.
