Government inquiry: It shouldn't be possible to fail immigrants

The government decided July 7 2016 to launch a special inquiry into how education for newly arrived students who come during the last grades of mandatory school can be improved in order to increase the possibility of the students to be admitted to Gymnasium.

"One cannot overstate the importance of completing the gymnasium in order to enter the work force. It is completely crucial for many adolescents to get in", says the minister of "boosting knowledge", Anna Ekström (Social Democrats) to Aftonbladet.

This wednesday the inquirer Ebba Ostlin came with the answers.

She suggests individual study plans, longer catch-up summer schools and increased tuition in the mother tongue of the student. Special focus will be targeted at certain subjects, such as Swedish, Mathematics and English.

Another suggestion of the report is that newly arrived students will simply will not be failed in subjects that they actually haven't passed. Instead, they will receive a written opinion on how much they have learned.

"Most principals say the students show great commitment and spend a lot of time to catch up with their peers but that their achievements still result in a failing grade. Focus should then instead be to show what those students have learned and how much they have developed. This would in turn lead to increased motivation and comprehension as opposed to getting a lot of F that show a failure in school", the report states.
