Finished reading it and doing some follow-up googling. Kinda disappointed that it gives no plausible explanation as to WHY it happened, which has always bugged me.

It mentions Israel wanting to breach a cease-fire with Syria, but I can't find any record of Israel agreeing to a cease-fire with Syria at that point, and the ship was near Egypt, not Syria.

It also mentions Israel wanted to cover up the execution of Egyptian POWs. Besides not being able to find any real evidence for that too, it seems it would be a lot easier to get the US government to cover up the deaths of Egyptian soldiers than it would be for them to cover up the deaths of American ones.
