Yeah you are right modern most modern houses in germany lack that sense of "gemütlichkeit". They look more like the typical single family home in the US.
But I think what makes a house comfy is the inside and most old houses around the globe have that.
I´ve been to marroco last year and the old houses look from the outside like shit but the inside is like a palace.
