I think Yugoslavia would be better for Europe, a strong regional player that wouldn't bow to 3rd world countries up north. It was fundamentally flawed however, a wrong economic system with suppressing national tensions in favor of a melting pot instead of increased federalization and too much economic divergence. We had one chance and we blew it for a few centuries.

Yugoslavia was obviously bullshit project. It started off as an ethnically Slavic monarchy. Albanians were not slavic so this was a problem for a big amount of albanians in Yugoslav territory. Then Yugoslavia became "socialist" on the skeleton of an ethnic monarchy and it was still shit. It only lasted because of CIA funded them to stop them getting absorbed by Stalin. That didn't last long and then the artificial project came crumbling down.
