AF, '81'-'07 including Desert Shield/Storm. Got Scud'ed (and saw early Patriots both miss and hit Scuds during the day in February) at KKMC but those went wide of the runways. Net result was all the Scuds were technically intercepted but it took more than one Patriot per Scud and the last one was near ground level. I worked the hot refuel pad and got to see all sorts of battle damaged A-10s return, get fixed by the CLSS teams then go back to the fight.
Coolest moment was F-16 landing with nose gear that wouldn't extend because downlock was damaged by a SAM. Pilot held it straight at high AOA then set the nose down neatly enough to grind the pitot tube in half lengthwise. Pilot didn't blow the canopy but in a display of giant balls opened it electrically and calmly walked away. Our Specialist Flight chief souvenired the nicely cross-sectioned pitot tube.
Saddest moment was A-10 coming back in manual reversion and crashing. He should have ejected.
Scariest moments were Scud alerts and not because of Scuds. Idiot fobbits (that term didn't exist then) dove into bunkers and you could hear their rifle bolts slamming home chambering rounds when they bumped their bolt catches. Many left their tinted visors on their gas masks and of course were blinded at night so they tripped over tent lines.

The way MIGs and Su jets are designed to operate out of dirty airports with minimal support is my argument.

They were our deployed neighbors. I was a flightline engine troop with the 33rd Aircraft Maintenance Unit working F-16s out of Shaw AFB, based at Al Dhafra UAE and doing combat turns at KKMC.

Later deployments were mostly uneventful. Southern Watch, Northern Watch etc. Worked the D-model Gary North flew when he made the first USAF AMRAAM kill. It was not a C-model as sometimes reported but he wasn't a pussy and didn't mind taking a bus into combat.

Desert sand and dust are far less a problem for modern aircraft then it might seem. I borescoped many F-16 engines during "50 hour" inspections and other than having nicely sand blasted fan and compressor sections they looked perfectly normal. (Remember Viper has a very low inlet. You can see faint dust devils just in front of the intake lip when they're running on sandy ramp.) Sand sticks to the usual fine coating of oil and fuel residue accumulated on external aircraft surfaces during high sortie rates but that washes off.

A-10 is nice to work on but F-16 and F-15 aren't difficult and all are a breeze compared to the old F-4 Phantom (I was Comm/Nav on those at Moody AFB).

You can operate most anything out of a bare base pretty easily. WWII aircraft were far more labor-intensive then modern jets. Sustaining high sortie rates requires careful maintenance management and sound logistics but frequent deployments since WWII mean everywhere we go someone has already been there and knows how to get shit done. Advance teams evaluate each location before the aircraft and main body of deployers arrive.

The sortie limiting factor in Desert Storm was aircrew rest, not fuel, ordnance or maintenance. There's nothing to do when deployed except fix writeups, do inspections, and work delayed minor discrepancies which is why mission capable rates often increase compared to home station.

All you fundamentally need from a forward location is a runway and some parking ramp space. All typical combat aircraft maintenance can be performed outdoors but a shelter is highly desirable for open fuel cell work. Portable shelters solve that problem.
