North American cities were similar to their European counterparts until WW2 ended then all the streetcar and rail systems were ripped out and everybody was forced to get a car

Streetcars are only better than buses if they operate on tunnels/viaducts in busy areas.

Otherwise, they're just as slow as buses, with less flexibility.

Plus, trolley tunnels don't require unsightly ventilation towers, and some have insanely high throughput (for example, SEPTA's Market Street trolley tunnel can handle 70 trolleys per hour).
