There's not so much value in the pre-Socratics. Panta rhei, yeah, everything is atoms, everything is water/fire. Great. Nothing about ethics, nothing about what society should look like, unless you count Pythagoras and his cult. It all takes off with Socrates. Stoics are interesting next.

Peterson talks about this concept a lot. He talks about how you can choose to be a hedonist and view life as meaningless and so then you don't really have any responsibility and so if you can just consistently find pleasure you're ok. But the price you pay is that your life is meaningless and when you die you've basically wasted it.

Or you can choose to view life as having meaning but then that carries a very heavy weight to every action you take, because every action you take affects not just your life which is meaningful but the life of everybody around you. And so literally every decision you make tilts the world a little bit more towards paradise or a little bit more towards plunging into the abyss. And so you can live a meaningful life and you can help others find greater meaning in their lives but when you fail, it's completely horrible, because not only do you experience the pain of that failure but so does literally everyone around you as the failure of what could have been reverberates out throughout eternity.
>>
>>128894052
>>128894771
Not really, it's a statement for taking action in the face of adversity actually. That specific statement is about descending into the undeworld while going after Tiamat, the dragon of chaos (a mythological metaphor for anomalies and problems in your life), slaying him and getting the gold he hides in his lair. Basically, you can't choose to not face the dragon of chaos: you can either go, chase him and face him voluntarily, or ignore him until he decides to come to you.
Either way, you'll have to face him and fight him, and you'll lose something on the way - you'll pay a price either way. However, if you choose to face him voluntarily, you'll perhaps face him before he is big and mighty, so the price you pay will most likely be smaller.
Watch maps of meaning to get a better understanding, he finished the series for 2017 a couple of weeks ago.

I don't agree it is wasteful, just not that meaningful.

Waste=/=meaning

Some people just want to do drugs and whore around. So long as they pay the bills other creative people can live their meaningful ways. Is that wrong? I don't think so and I don't think Jordan thinks so either.

>>128898269

Peterson was eager to be understood by someone who was eager to create space enough between them to appear contrary.

Harris embarrasses himself as an intellectual of good faith inquiry in these interviews. The only thing Peterson fails at is coming across in tidy little bumperstickers and easily digested memes for the cool kids. He commits the unforgivable millennial sin of effortposting, and so fails to acquit himself to their satisfaction.

"life is suffering" means that the only meaning you can prove is the meaning of pain. you cant argue your way out from pain. how is that not correct. you mean you can prove that there exist other intrinsic values in life?

Jordan sees the world that we can make conscious decisions, in spite of personal psychological trauma, e.i "chemical brain imbalances".

Harris has said we're all victims of our brain chemistry. So you can't really fault anyone was the impression I got from Harris.

>>128899343
You can argue the way you perceive pain. You can make pain directional, as in calling it strife and working passed it. Calling it suffering is just retarded since you will emerge yourself in the chaos instead of learning to work with it.

In economic terms you could say he's referencing say social capital expenditure and risk premium vs opportunity cost.

Everything ultimately breaks down into time costs in accounting. Its our true medium. Socially your capital medium is perhaps attention.

The human mind is pretty good at giving attention to things over time. If you've taken the time to attend to some mystery of the universe but keep that knowledge to yourself and never do anything you've invested time and attention and purpose into something and wasted it. And instead of talking about the interesting things you've worked on you talk about things you don't know all that much about or make small talk. You compound the problem. People know you're bullshitting or halfhearted or toeing the line. They know you've wasted your time and further theirs. As such they will want less and less to do with you b/c you will waste their resources as well.

Everything you do involves the sacrifice of all the other things you could be doing.
When you jack off you could be working out
when you watch reality tv you could be reading a book.
When you fuck the ugly girls you could have been working on the pretty ones, but now that you've fucked the ugly ones the pretty ones know that you're not worth their time.

I don't think many people have that much choice in their day to day lives. It's all about upbringing and personality.

Nerds will be nerds and so on.
>>
>>128901231
Untrue. This is the fatalism at the core of postmodernism.

If a nerd does MMA and plays d&d he is a Fighter and a Nerd. We all have things we enjoy, and will prefer those. However the meaningful things we do always have an adaption period wherein their efforts seem futile. You can be as multifaceted or one dimensional as you want to be.

Exactly - the reality is that your average person wields HUGE influence over their life and it's outcome. But personal responsibility is a hard philosophy to push because businesses are against it, leftists are against it, and your average person prefers to blame his problems on things outside his control.

I would argue that this is true to the extent (benign to extreme) that one is both brought up, as well as to the extent that one is born with the mental capabilities to be (productively) aware, active, and creative.

why do you say such things? He had a tremendous body of work, trouncing all of successors combined. People told him things, secret things.
Certainly, one could say, as a product of the times, he was ill equipped to create robust frameworks, however he was the best equipped man at the time and he glimpsed through the keyhole into the madness of man's mind. Perhaps the knowledge changed him, perhaps men were different then and his cohort is different from ours, for the simple fact that he changed our understanding of ourselves fundamentally. Take the flat earthers, universally derided today. Freud's subconscious is universal today. I do not think any one denies it. And in a limited sense in order to prove the existence of such a phenomena, he needed to use a visceral universal drive to prove it to himself and others that he was correct. Regardless his body of work and the approximations within give us far more data than his own analysis can give.

Yeah.. that's what happens when people have something good to say. It's capitalism at work and he deserves every penny that somebody made the decision to hand over willingly. We don't care if he gets money doing this, he deserves ALL of it. Our way to fund people we enjoy has reached an all time high in my opinion. It is still mediated by a website and I don't know what cut they take, but it's better than getting book sales.

I've seen this argument pop up quite a few times on varying websites now, WHO CARES. Save or spend your money, whats it to you what other people do with it?

Hes going to invest alot of that money educating the western world. If he dedicates his life to that cause and is able reach a wider audience with more wisdom than he already spread, then he deserves to be well compensated. He is the type of person i want to see earn tons of money because it cant be more obvious that he is a force for good.
