I've never heard much about this concept your saying at my church.

Modern bibles like the NIV translate this to Rape to show how evil Christianity is but it very clearly says lay with her, when the bible talks about rape it says lay with her and force her or something along those lines.

Deuteronomy 22:29 says
Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.

You pay the father the dowry which was normal all throughout history, and then marry her.

It very clearly says Force her, and says the man will die but not the woman. I have heard some people argue that this is only for betrothed women, but the bible says that the woman doesn't deserve death, in Deuteronomy 22:27 it explains
For he found her in the field, and the betrothed damsel cried, and there was none to save her.

She cried out but nobody saved her, I think you can be "betrothed" without knowing your husband, you have committed yourself to your future husband whoever he may be even if you've never met yet.

I don't exactly see a point in doing it t b h other than tradition.

The way I see/have seen/heard a couple getting married is like this:

>The man then talks to her parents/father (possibly it's both parents)
>They agree that the couple can date, Rules are set etc.
>Eventually the male proposes if it's all going well
>Marriage then consummation of it.

Doesn't have to be exactly that but the main thing is the agreement of getting married.
(One brother proposed straight up outside the church (I think he just asked her if they wanted to get married and she said sure) and then they got married at a later time)

I'd say just tell them that as long as they agree that they are now a married couple then they're married (preferably with a witness, might as well just ask the pastor or elder)
Although I think the way that my church does it is that they actually talk to the couple in private (I don't know for how long) to make sure they want to get married and then probably pray over the couple.
