Fun facts, in the past people believed The Garden of Eden lay in the east, and churches have the benches facing east. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. It's because everything from orientation (west/east) to reading and writing (left-to-right and right-to-left) all point to the promise land. Also, year 0 is when Jesus Christ was born making BC, Before Christ and AD, After Death.

Maybe it WAS the whole planet but from what I know in the past they believed it still existed in their time, somewhere in the east. Don't know if it was just a metaphor, because otherwise why didn't they all travel east?
