Korea today 'contributes' about $800m per annum to USFK - after decades of contributing nothing. Most of this pays for the salaries of Koreans working on the bases and material equipment such as non-military vehicles. Basically, the money is re-invested back into the economy. The Korea of the 60s and 70s was very poor and aid was needed. Today it isn't poor; it's quite wealthy. It has twice the population of the Norks, the economy is many times larger, and it enjoys technological and productive supremacy.

The US has fallen into a trap of subsidising the defence of wealthy countries, ones whose people enjoy a high quality of life an excellent social benefits such as socialised health care. US defence assistance allow these counties to divert money from one of the most fundamental tasks of a sovereign state, defence, to other quality-of-life-enhancing expenditures.
