This is a very common thread on /pol/ and I think about this quite often. I even bought a game called city skylines to mess around with city design. Unfortunately the game is pretty limited.

Cars, suburbs, etc were certainly a mistake, but what is the solution in todays society? Big high density buildings where everyone is a renter seems pretty awful. I think medium density (think townhouses/multigenerational homes) on small streets are the way to go.. You see this a lot in old european towns.

Not the case in the US. Many cities and parts of cities were built in the industrial area which made them polluted and loud factory areas. Middle class people would own cars and live far enough away from the pollution to only experience it while working. Poor would live walking distance from industrial centers. Upper white suburbs can be really nice. I knew everybody and could walk to their houses whenever I wanted. When we wanted to do something different we'd just drive to the city or go dick around innawoods.
