In the short term it would help to drastically cut interest on current outstanding debt, making many debts that are near insurmountable actually feasible to pay off in a reasonable amount of time.

Long term the entire structure of post-secondary would have to change. I do not support state funded post-secondary if the schools remained the same as they operate today. There is too much fluff that was put in solely to bring in more students who would not otherwise have been qualified to attend the school at all.

I called Discover once to lower my interest rate and they tried to pressure me into putting about $20k of my student loan debt on the card. They offered me a lower rate than I was paying on the student loan but only for a year. It would have been a bad deal... unless I went bankrupt, in which case $20k of my loans would have disappeared and Discover would have gotten burnt. Okay further to that I'd like to see a rework of the sports team situation. I do not like how universities, and even highschools for that matter, will kid-glove their athletes through the academic stuff just so they can keep them on the school teams. I'd be okay with universities continuing to run as feeder systems for the pro leagues but get rid of the requirement that the players be enrolled students. Preferably I would like academic institutions to do away with their athletics programs entirely but I know they use them as a source of income that does, mostly, filter it's way over to the academics.

I work at a university (non-academic position) and the duality happening between the athletics departments and the academics departments really pisses me off. Most of the kids playing on those teams do not belong in a facility devoted to education.

Student debt is a combination of several things:

Not an easy problem to solve, though I think getting away from the universities would be a good start. Instead of universities, why not develop student apprenticeship programs? They would work a lot better, and put less of a debt load on the government because the onus would be put on private business to prepare young adults for the job. It's also up to them to keep their trainees -- there would be talent poaching like never before.
