Runescape, 2006.

Some player teleported out of his Player Owned Home, and was able to attack players in "safe", non-pvp areas, places where people are holding their banks onto them, their expensive items, you name it. So this guy discovers this exploit, and on June 6th, 2006, he attacks people in this city called Falador. He and his cohort kill a couple dozen players, some losing party hats (which are worth millions of gp, essentially equivalent to a couple 1000's of $).

The Falador massacre was one of the coolest experiences I've ever had in a game. It was like all of the game's systems started to crumble and everyone lost their minds.

I was fast asleep when it happened. I got a call from someone at the office who said they need me to come in and fix a bug.

It was a simple enough fix.

This was insane, I was in catherby in the same world fishing some lobbies when I heard the news, it was like being in Connecticut when 9/11 happened. I banked all my valuables and ported in with nothing and saw the litter of corpses. Scars me to this day.
