I've been considering this very exact thing. Once I retire from the military in 6 years as a CW3, I'll be making about $3000/mo so expenses will be covered. I'll be 42 so still young enough to make an arduous journey. I would walk, maybe starting from Seattle and ending in Ushuaia, the southern most airport in South America. Id bring a modest pack with me, enough room for one or two changes of clothes, extra socks, simple rain gear, light sleeping bag, solar charger for phone and satellite comms, a well hidden firearm for protection and finally some food and water. I'll replenish my supplies as needed and plan ahead when I hit a long stretch of no civilization. If the weather is looking bad or I'm just tired of sleeping outdoors I'll get a room and relax and bathe. Its 7740 miles straightline, so probably between 9000-10,000 walking diatance. I expect it would take about a year and a half to two years.

I was a wanderer for a short time last year following a rough patch in life. At first I was a simple hobo living in a wooded suburb in a carefully concealed position behind a church. Nobody knew I was living a couple hundred feet from them, sleeping, cooking, reading, etc. Once I got my car back, I traversed the south, looking for work or any sort of prospect. Only time I got accosted by the police was in Nashville, TN. They just asked me if I had a place to stay and I said I'd find a hotel. Drove a distance and fell back asleep. Met all sorts of crazies but the world's underbelly seems to have a sort of mercy of its own and I never got in dire straits. I'd try it again, but I'm deathly afraid of doing it forever.

Just a thought really. I might also just say screw it and get a truck/jeep with a covering in the back to sleep in. I just read a story about a guy doing a similar trip in 7 months, but after he got to Ushuaia he had to drive to Paraguay to sell his car on the black market. Walking would be an interesting way to really see everything there is to see, plus maybe less of a target for thieves, since easier to stay out of sight. At any rate, I'd stay following main roads towards interesting locations and population centers where I can still buy supplies.
