Why is this?

having a college degree is no longer a sign of intelligence, just like graduating high school no longer means you actually have any skills
Lots of degrees are quite useless.
So they are unproductive in general.
This partially explains why women make less than men despite being majority in colleges.

Because they're flooding the market for one, entry level positions are being given to foreigners for two, and perhaps most importantly they're getting liberal arts degrees that couldn't qualify you for anything other than Starbucks barista level work.
Then they all move to the big liberal cities because they want to be "hip" or live in a "progressive city" and those cities have a million other people with better degrees and cheaper labor and the price of business real estate and regulations from the Fed mean less and less people are making their own small businesses, further reducing entry level employment and skilled work employment as well.
Of course, the expansion of federal regulation and foreign job outsourcing are big issues our current president is addressing with force. Will the state's comply? No fucking chance. California bureaucracy just passed a single payer healthcare system twice it's budget, which means "rearranging budgets from other departments" and guess who will suffer from that.
But at least you can get free blood pressure meds and ER visits after your unemployment causes you to enter a huge depression and you try to kill yourself! That is, if the roads and hospitals still get adequate funding. I'm guessing they wont.
