It's a derivative meant so that you can make automatic money when the market is volatile. So in other words, if you can't figure out how to play the market, just buy this magic index that plays it for you.

It's not a terrible hedge, but the more you look in to it the more wtf it gets and you realize that it's all jewish house of cards. It's been a while since I analyzed it for a friend, but it wasn't hard to find how close it is to going upside down at just the wrong moment.

There's a particular formula used to price options (calls, puts, etc) called the Black-Scholes model, which uses a bunch of different inputs: price of the stock, strike price of the option, current short-term interest rate and a measure of volatility (standard deviation of returns).

What the VIX does is basically back out the implied measure of volatility indicated by current prices of options on the S&P 500. This supposedly gives an indication of what the market thinks volatility is going to be like over the next 30 days.

In practice, the level of the VIX is correlated at about 0.75 with what actual volatility ends up being over the next 30 days. That sounds impressive, but you find pretty much the exact same correlation between actual volatility over the previous 30 days and the subsequent 30 day period. Meanwhile, the correlation between the VIX and previous 30 day volatility is like 0.9, meaning that's pretty much what it's measuring.

>Portugal came out of 2008
No you didn't, nobody has
None of us have come close to breaking even yet ffs
This "unprecidented growth" is literally just growth unhindered because we're so in the negative going up is increasingly easy
The '08 Crash saw the DOW go from 14,300 something to 6,800 or so.
The world market as a whole has gotten bigger in the decade since.
Therefore our gains aren't jack shit compared to what we were before the drop.
A lot of 2nd and 3rd world nations have been beefing up their market presence and as a result the market as a whole globally has gotten larger, but that's misleading because the market share has increased along with the markets expansion so it's not more money going to the same people it's more money going to the same people and then some causing profit margins to shrink
You don't drop 777 points in one day and just magically recover from it by driving your numbers back up. That's not how economics works

FRIDAY: Total Economic Collapse Begins (9th Jun)
"LABOUR MAJORITY GOVERNMENT" will splash across the London newspapers by 1am GMT Friday morning.

Expect...

By 2am GMT, the pound and UK bonds will be in free fall and the Australian markets will be off a couple of percentage points.

An hour before London markets open, the European markets will be off 5 or 6 percent.

By opening, the London markets will plummet.

By Noon, London markets will be down 10% or so and they will start worrying about the US.

With no cards for the Fed left to play in terms of interest rates, New York will also start to slide as the dollar skyrockets.

As New York slides, any recovery has gone in London and a fall of well over 12% will have occurred by closing bell.

Now, propelled by the final sell off in London, New York will plummet and be off by over 10% by the closing bell.

Over the weekend, the dollar will continue to power ahead with bond prices tumbling. Attempts to stop failure by Government action will worsen things.

By Monday, Australia will plummet triggering another round of selling and the capital markets seizing up.

London and New York will follow.

...And, a few weeks later, US Banks will need yet more bailout or total failure will occur - whether they can or will get it, I have no idea.

The more I watch it, the more spooky and esoteric the market seems to be. But one thing is simple, it likes to come back to important places, and it like to do that to fuck as many people as possible.
That big M shape it went past in say 2011, that's a big level, and it really needs to come back and test it, and fuck as many as possible long term buy and holders before probably resuming. When this happens is another matter, but the other unfailing rule is that the big money will be selling to the mugs, at the peak euphoria, when 'this time it's different'. It applies on all time scales.
These principles when charted seem to apply to all human activities, pic related.

But unlike with Hoover they're trying to do it now and that's a terrible idea because you have a money mogule running the nation and giving him literally years to fix an economic fallout. The 08 recession was much greater than the one in the late 70 as the entire world almost fell into a depression. Everyone lowered interest rates to record lows and the Fed overprinted money.
Since then numerous bubbles have formed and have inflated much larger than the one 10 years ago. The EU is losing control while its countries desperately need bailouts while the US is falling apart socially and economically as it hardly recovered from the 08 crash

Honestly the Recession of 08 was the practically the end of the world and right now were all in purgatory waiting for our sentences

Also, in a worldwide collapse, money could flow into the US markets because of perceived comparative safety. Who's to say. I have no crystal ball.

political? Trump was elected and people said that would crash the US stock market but it didnt even move the needle.

Fiscal? Yes there is *maybe* long term fiscal problems in the US and other western country but things like social security arent insolvent for atleast another 40-50 years so that cant be priced in right now.

Growth? Like I said most of the worlds major economies are chugging along very nicely right now, in fact its the best global growth we have ever seen.

Motheruckers have been pushing for it since the 80's and once they got it they wanted to open up more and more areas to them so that they could weaken and make the military less effective. Because with our military nobody will ever have the balls to outright ho to war with us.

Say you join at 18... You have a solid 20 year career and retire at 38. You will collect a 60% pension. In Canada, you will probably retire as a Warrant Officer. Highest a WO can get in terms of pay, last I checked, was $92k. At the age of 38, you will retire with useful job skills, experience in that field and a guaranteed income of about $55,000.

Add that to what ever job you get on the outside and you should be pretty comfy. The military has absolutely the best pension around.

We have enough oil to last ourselves 500 years if we wanted to completely rely on ourselves for oil.

The problem is that all macro economic data around the world is compromised and massaged to get the desired result so that politicians can stay in office based on the fake economic data. Just like how our 4.3% unemployment rate is a total farce. All presidents (all of em in my lifetime at least) want to corrupt data to look like they are economic geniuses. They do the same with CPI to keep COLAs down for SS. A wise man once told me, "never believe anything until it's officially denied" when it comes to economic stats, reports, hype, etc.

That's why I use TA only for trading. It is always the same. Price action on a chart is purely a gauge of greed and fear, which are universal and timeless.

Thinking sitting in a fort eating maccies is anything like real war. In actual war studies found something about 100 days continual fighting turns 98/100 men insane and the other two were insne to begin with (psychological issues ie psychopathic etc.)
Britian found it in WW1 as well or possibly it was WW2. Instead of resting our troops with the most combat experience we sent them straight into battle on new fronts. Despite the rationality that experience means better soldiers they performed poorly as hundreds of days of straight shelling and gun battles puts you so on edge that you turn insane. Can't sleep which makes it worse etc.

>>
>>128640902
Totally would believe it. Military knows about psychology better than anyone. They need to...it's hard to get people to say "how high?" when the brass says "jump" without knowing how humans tick.

I learned through trial and error mostly and from having worked in that God-awful financial industry (hated working for banks, I can confirm the evil. But I do love to trade) around the time of NASDAQ bubble and bust. Manias, boom/bust cycle theories are all the same, just rhyming throughout history all based on human psychology of greed and fear. Greed is longer lasting, hence bull markets lasting years. Fear is fast, violent, volatile and of shorter duration, hence bear markets are the same. Once people learn that, there is $ to be made trading both sides.

Well, if you're absolutely shit, that will happen to you. If the military is having difficulty with retention, your contract will be continued indefinitely. The US is big and they always have faggots churning through the military... But every other western military has trouble keeping guys, so it is a good bet if you act like an adult. It's a good bet in the US if you play your cards right.

I met a guy that started in the armored corps, came to the conclusion that he was a lifer and switched over to the Navy to become a welder. He was excited about going into underwater diving, which is really lucrative on the outside. Ultimately, if you can make it work and you don't have a better career lined up at that age already... There's no reason not to try.
