Agree with you here but what would we have done? We had fuck all coal and realistically, probably never could have amassed an army for colonialism like the British, French, Dutch, Spanish or Portuguese. We probably would have gotten into trade/naval war with England or Holland due to them being Protestant and probably would have got BTFO.

Irish standards of living didn't get better until post-Famine when the population pressure ceased and wages and standard of living increased.

When transatlantic trade opened up with America our grain market got BTFO and we moved to pasture farming. There was fuck all work here, hence why so many emigrated to other parts of the Anglosphere. Also we didn't have any industrial power to sustain employment and even if we didn't get invaded, we probably wouldn't have had the network in place to carry out an Industrial revolution of our own without having colonies.
