Pure libertarianism doesn’t work.

Not in theory, in practice. Government is a necessary function to coordinate mutual defense.

At the dawn of humanity, people lived in a society with the smallest government ever. Maybe just a village chief. That worked alright until the two villages over the hill got together under a single tribal chief, slaughtered the village standing alone, and divided up the sheep.

The long arc of human history has been a continuation of that trend. Bigger groups join forces led by a government to devour smaller groups. Village chiefs beat robber gangs. Tribal chiefs beat village chiefs. Kings beat tribal chiefs. Emperors beat kings. Modern democracy beat emperors.

The kind of collective defense that stringent libertarians advocate is as much a myth as working communism.

There are lot of good arguments for limited government (for example, the only things that killed millions of people in the last century were diseases and governments), but any society that gives up government will be consumed by another society that didn’t.
