Honestly? i'd take a huge hit and go suburbs like Downers Grove / Darien / Woodridge and try to feking rent a car to drive up to the city. With parking tough as balls, you could Uber it as well. The closer to the city, the tougher it is to travel. Tourist traps are easy to get to by train (the Metra) if you don't want to drive 30minutes, and you can hit a lot of attractions in a whole day.

If you had to book closer, try Near West Side if you don't mind urban adventures, or River North/Near North Side for a fancy section. Old Town's o-kay but it gets pressure once a while, mostly LBGQT / SWJ bullshit. This still depends on how much you wanna cover in Chicago.
