Guarantee more republicans have legitimate reasons why it's bad compared to how many liberals have legitimate reasons for it being good.

Even just look at the facebook comments on Trumps post. Quite a few are stating the facts how this does nothing to advance green tech in the states, and is just a cash grab for "developing countries". One that won't even mitigate the warming.

The liberals on the other hand genuinely believe that this somehow means the US is somehow going to cut green programs and clean energy tech, turning the US into a wasteland of pollution.

The difference in stupidity is palpable.

Reduce the rate of temperature increase to prevent reaching a 2 degree c global increase in the next 100 years. It would only be by about half a degree, but that would prevent many of the most catastrophic effects. The US pulling out alone will limely lead to a .2 to .3 degree c increase in this timeframe. If you know anything at all about biology you would know that evolution will not be able to keep Pace with shifting environments this quickly. It also completely halts global cooperative efforts to stop this problem.

You can ignore it but the effects of global warming are going to be INSANELY expensive. Trump is borrowing money against your future to give to coal companies and his rich friends and you're just rolling over and taking it

It doesn't automatically control the temperature. Individual nations have to decide what to do.

A more realistic and enforceable agreement would agree on level of carbon emissions, for instance. As it stands, a nation could choose to use voodoo magic to reduce the temperature.

No, being wrong means that we've unnecessarily spent billions of dollars subsidizing the energy policy for third world countries. There's a very real cost to these policies.

You know how I know for a fact that all this shit is nonsense? Nobody is talking about measures that would actually reduce emissions: fewer subsidies for meat production, ending replacement migration, slowing exports from China.

If climate change is the most serious threat to the world. And citizens of developed countries contribute significantly more pollution. Then why is the left trying to flood developed countries with more people?

The sensible solution is to level off the population in developed countries and stop India and China from further development. If the science is as settled as you believe, we would be completely justified in taking such drastic actions.

Hey, so.. I'm a rational person with a physics degree and I'm not from America so I don't have a patriotic angle, but I entirely agree with Trump's decision.

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1758-5899.12295/full

This paper covers the predicted effects of all current energy schemes.

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/enhanced/figures/doi/10.1111/1758-5899.12295#figure-viewer-gpol12295-fig-0011

This figure here, the blue line is if America takes part in the Paris treaty, red is if they don't.

It will make a 0.015°C difference, and cost trillions.

It is an economic suicide pact. China and India, who are respectively a superpower and a potential upcoming superpower, both are not going to adjust their climate change policies, and their contamination dwarfs ours.

So by cutting down on the relatively low effect we have versus them, it allows their economies to grow, and them to have a greater stranglehold over us. If you want India to be more powerful than America in 20 years, sign more treaties like this.

If you care about western values over 0.015°C that's going to happen either way, and acknowledge that climate change won't be fixed until renewable energies become more economically viable than fossil fuels, pulling out of the Paris treaty is a great idea.

China stopped its one child policy.

Stopping the development of China and India should be your main goal if you actually care about the environment. As those two countries develop, they're poised to triple the number of citizens living in developed countries. Add in the population explosion in Africa (fueled by leftists subsidizing food and medicine), and you've got a disaster.

Perpetual economic growth isn't preferable or reasonable in the long term. We should focus on per capita GDP growth, not just total GDP growth. The shitskins have to fuck off back to their countries.

The sierra club actually used to be against Mexican immigration for this reason. It's absolutely irreconcilable among modern liberals, they support third world population explosion and importing them to the largest per capital energy users.

It would be interesting to press them on the issue. Academics can't get away with denying the facts of this.

The first step to halting their development is no subsidizing it with the trillions if dollars this Accord was promising them. We need to destroy their economies at whatever cost we can. A similar strategy needs to be put in place for Africa. Their population explosion and development isn't sustainable. We're looking at an all around struggle for resources if the current trajectory is allowed to play out.

This isn't polite to say, and it doesn't fit into the "whitey is bad" narrative, so it will never be pursued.

There's a real overzealousness of scientists to believe that the ultimate goal of mankind is to benefit science and that they would be the best at making legislation.

Now, we could talk about how going for pure logic and science should really end in us relying on positive eugenics to make the most intelligent offspring to carry on the scientific legacy, however, even just ignoring that whole problem with scientific-led political policy:

Scientists always assume that if they instate a policy, completely ignoring the economic cost, everyone in the world will obey and it will cause the nation to prosper. It's true in some cases, it is not at all true in all cases, and this is one of those cases. It would be arguably BAD for science and for the world climate to allow third world nations who don't care about scientific process or clean energy to become superpowers. We have a respect for science, it's important that those memetics continue, and that only happens by safeguarding our value system, which happens by safeguarding our nations economically.

You still haven't replied to my post, and yet you're replying to all these other people. I assume that means you can't actual deal with an actual debate and only want to talk to stupid people on the other side to reinforce your idea that everyone who doesn't agree with you is an idiot.

The reason that everyone is melting down over Trump pulling out of the climate agreement is because we're basically dealing with liberal religious views when discussing climate change.

It's a matter not just of faith, not just of identity, but deeply-rooted spiritual need for "goodness". In practice, liberals feel that climate change mitigation is a way to absolve themselves of their white sins of privilege and power - it's essentially a leftist version of paying indulgences. What's worse, climate change penance has to be done on a civilizational level to be effective, so those heretical climate change deniers are actually PREVENTING the progressive faithful from obtaining salvation!

Remember how upset everyone got when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the cathedral door? Trump basically did just that by refusing to sign the Paris Accord, AND he told the libs that they won't ever be able to get into Marxist Heaven.

The correct reaction is, "We can fuel trillions and it won't scratch the surface, meanwhile China and India are going to be polluting so much that the net good we do is dwarfed by their bad, and put ourselves in such a weak economic position we're powerless to stop them".

What should we be throwing then? Hundreds of trillions? We should ourselves become third world nations? What you're implying is ridiculous.

The only way to fix climate change is to make solar more economically viable than oil, and suddenly all the capitalist oligarchs will be incredibly interested in renewable energy.

The AI revolution is coming, the clean energy revolution is coming, just the mass production that e.g. Tesla are doing and the advances of e.g. Deepmind need to take place. These WILL take place within the next 50 years, and then the problem will fix itself.

In the mean time, there is nothing we can do that really stands to make any difference other than keep enough money in our economies to fund the research and production for this technology. The Paris treaty is a pipedream.

And, if you want to cite me other studies that you feel are more accurate, feel free. I'm making my decisions based on peer reviewed data, not what my twitter bubble parrots.

Exactly so why are other countries not willing to renegotiate with Trump? If it really is that bad and they really care that much dont you think they would swallow their pride and do whatever it takes? Wouldnt they have taken more extreme measures if we're really all fucked in 100 years or whatever
>>

>We need to destroy their economies at whatever cost we can.
>if engineers ruled the world

A man can dream..

I've got an alternate solution though. Take control of all oil worldwide, tax it high enough to reduce consumption to whatever acceptable level, spend the taxes to research alternative energy. We get an empire for conservatives, and save the world for greenies, everyone wins. Theoretically it would fix the problem in 20 years.

What it does is throw trillions down the drain.

I also want to point out, there are studies that disagree with the study I cited:

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1758-5899.12316/full

Those studies disagree with it, saying it is overapocalyptic and temperatures aren't expected to rise that much. In other words, the study I gave you that shows the impact is negligible, is considered by other more recent journals to be /overestimated/.

It's literally a pointless treaty. The idea that it's "just nice to do that" is, again, a silly scientist-centric way of looking at things that has no basis in the reality of balancing a country's budget and policy making, and international diplomacy.

Don't worry, everything is fine, Earth will survive, humans will survive, and the situation will get better, but this won't help fix it.

The fact is, we can survive on root vegetables, humans will be fine no matter what. I have more empathy for the working class who suffer from bad economic policies than for some animals or plants in the ocean that stand to undergo extinction (although realistically we would keep samples of any of them that have already been discovered like we currently prevent everything from going extinct).

In a reductionist viewpoint, preserving local ecosystems basically comes down to, "I like the idea of looking at animals and eating different flavours of food" (which, btw, eating animals is not good for the environment so that's not an argument for endgame climate control).

If you like this stuff more than you like looking after your poor, your sick and your old, then sure. I really honestly can live without biodiversity, and evolution will cause new adaptations to fill in those gaps either way.

I'm from England and we have no predators, very few annoying insects (basically just wasps and flies), lots of species of flower, the basic species of trees and all the vegetables you could want for farming. Likewise we have lifestock that feeds on grass etc. that would never be affected by diversity.

Maybe if you are so middle class that you get to go scuba diving on some reef somewhere (in which case you really don't get to talk about cutting subsidies to the poor), then you will notice a problem, but realistically you will never see a difference for anything that climate change will affect.

Oh, some part of the rainforest that people never went in.

Oh, polar bears are in zoos now instead of cannibalising each other adrift on a block of ice in the shit middle of nowhere.

Meanwhile scientists are happy because it funds science and bodes well for the future of fixing climate change.

However, it does basically nothing for actual climate change and only stands to hurt western countries, who we KNOW will happily put economic policies (like, let's increase immigration, this makes money), over their citizenry. See the nailbombing in my city last month in which my friend's brother was murdered.

Trump is doing something that is unpopular, because he knows it's better for his country, it's the same as the muslim ban. You won't hear english people say it out loud, but whaddya know, another terrorist attack last night in London about a 1 minute walk from where one of my best friends live.

It's not that China and India "tricked" anyone, it's that they don't give a shit about what policies the west have, and the west has such a saviour complex and the idea that it can never be overthrown, that they happily make suicidal legislation.

I have trouble believing such a small temperature change in itself would destroy an ecosystem. Large mammals should be fine, insects can migrate, smaller things like fungi/bacteria can evolve quick enough to adapt. If the effect is so drastic, where are the dead ecosystems? Biggest threats I hear about are rainforest destruction for farming and hunting.

Before the Industrial Revolution we had been in 100 million year trend of atmospheric carbon depletion due to carbon fossilization, CO2 levels were down to approximately 217 ppm, if it had fallen under 200 ppm then photosynthesis would have shut down.
We saved the planet from going into a possibly unrecoverable snowball Earth. If you're really worried, though, your concern should be with disappearing carbon sinks rather than emissions. The loss of phytoplankton to toxic dumping by China, India and the rest of third world and population booms in Africa, South Asia and Latin America causing rampant deforestation is what you need to be correcting.

>I don't think it's a "scam" or "conspiracy"
Honestly it probably is a scam because an overwhelming majority of the public speech about counteracting climate change is just advertising for green/alt energy.

If you really wanted to counteract climate change you would look for an active solution, like engineering more efficient breeds of sugar cane and algae to act as carbon sinks. Or coming up with some device that reduces CO2 and running it a very dense source of energy like nuclear. Yet most of the time we hear politicians going on about MUH GREEN ENERGY when the reality is that even if we all moved to green energy we'd still be producing a ton of greenhouse gases from stuff like breeding livestock and just manufacturing common materials like plastic, steel, etc.

And to top it off saying that we're going to slow down climate change is a really weak message. It doesn't make any sense for it to be used as virtue signaling and what not. If you really wanted a strong message you'd go out and say "We're going to kick climate change's ass". It's not like the masses actually care about actual science. Everyone fell for "solar roadways" just because the creators said it was kick ass and got that Firefly guy to promote it.

So we have a passive "solution" that's going to slow down our deaths and a message that's weak and passive by nature. Given what we know about politicians it seems more likely that they're getting kickbacks from green energy companies who get government funding.

The rate we're pumping ghgs into the atmosphere will send us into environment changing temps at an unprecedented rate the likes of which will ruin civilization and any chance humanity had to travel beyond the stars.
