I went to an international program for politics. In nov 2015, when there was a terrorist attack in Paris, I was one of the naive stupid people that changed my Facebook profile picture to have a French flag overlay.

A month or two later, I noticed something interesting. Some of the afghan students 1) had a shell Facebook account which they use to interact with everyone 2) a real Facebook account which they use to interact with their in group of Muslims, with their full Muslim name 3) at the time of the Paris attack, with the flag overlay on Facebook, some of the Muslim students, even a guy who I thought was cool with me, probably got extremely butt blasted that I did the flag overlay, and instead did a afghani flag overlay on their in-group Facebook account, with a really intense mean-mug, thinking only their in-group would know about it. And he got many comments encouraging and rallying around him from tons of Muslims.

Truth is, for how much the west wants to think of everyone as being one people, that you just need to welcome them more, many other countries act nationalistically and in an us vs them dynamic. They are watching you, stalking you, and sometimes you have no idea what can set them off. Even your own naïveté is enough to enrage them, as you live a stupid, innocent life, while they are poor and in war mode. So for many of them, it's just survival mode and deception, as they feel an existential crisis from their countries getting bombed. It's only going to get more and more volatile.

People like Sadiq Khan, and those people who say "you just need to welcome them more" are completely dishonest with themselves, and endangering everyone. The truth is that because many of them are in an us vs them mindset, you must also be conscious of this. And that alone is enough to shift the dynamics of society. You have to decide if this is something worth living with.
