She had a strong position at the time and then fucked everything up in the campaign. They could've solidified their standing before brexit to be able to push through difficult policies if need be. If the election didn't happen now, it would fall right after brexit, when tories would probably be extremely unpopular.
This was a way to both strength their current position and win some time to regain popularity after a difficult brexit.
