Yes it absolutely does, it frees your mind and has all sorts of psychological benefits when you just dig into your work and focus on it. I'd say physical jobs achieve this more than mental jobs.

I worked nothing but physical/blue collar jobs from the time I was 18 until about 27, then I inherited a large estate from my grandfather, I haven't had to work since (34 now) and I will admit that while I had a couple years of fun once I was first given my wealth, that time has kind of passed and now I'm probably less happy psychologically than I was when I had work to focus on. Now any work I do is optional, not out of necessity, so I don't really have to give it my all, I can half ass it because there's nothing at stake. The best I have now is throwing myself into hobbies (restored a '69 Camaro last year, couple years ago helped build a house on my property, stuff like that).

I feel bad for any of you that are NEETs and haven't ever actually done real physical labor, developed calluses and blisters on your hands, and seen a project from start to finish. Something about the experience can't be achieved anywhere else in life. It's like initially you hate it, you're covered in sweat, maybe you have a pounding headache, but you get past that part and its euphoric its like you almost want to suffer it makes you feel good, and you see your work resulting in something and feel a sense of empowerment. Eh, I don't expect too many to understand. Sounds stupid to read it unless you've felt it.
