It's a good question, but i think it's to avoid getting blue balled by the burgers going towards Al-Bukamal.
It looks like their idea is to continue the push towards al-Qaim from the north and continue up the euphrates towards Dez, but wouldn't continuing the advance up the Euphrates from Baghdad make more sense? They could even avoid taking the Euphrates road and just do pic related, it would severly shorten the supply lines but i guess this highway is easily ambushed.

Maybe the burgers are blocking pic related from happening somehow or the idea is to box in the Peshmerga and SDF from making any additional gains.
