I am careful with my money, I have £8000 in savings, I have a university degree, and literally my only options are to either work in minimum wage retail jobs or train to be a teacher. Teachers do get a decent salary but it is suicide tier work load (60 hour weeks).

I don't really remember what we used at uni, but it was some minimalistic paid IDE because they wanted us to handle all the packaging/importing and GUI coding by hand so we didn't get "bad habits". Maybe it was JDeveloper but I'm not sure.

We did most of ours in EMACS. But professionally I now use Visual Studio. .net dominates over here if you actually want to earn a living so you can't avoid it. The new versions are ok but badly made plugins can make it really unstable. And also obviously M$ so they make insane decisions sometimes.

Not at all, any degree where you have to write lots of stuff gives you office skills experience and that's what employers look for. You would probably be better off not even mentioning your degree, as sad as that is.

You have the right attitude to suck it up and get over it. Don't do any of the work in the labs / library if you can help it, do it all at home where you'll be less distracted (it made it way easier for me).
As for friendly linux, it doesn't exist. Some distros give you easy GUI interfaces but the moment you need to go off the beaten track it's right to the command line. I truly recommend trying out a few pendrive versions just to fuck about with, get used to bash etc because at the moment it sounds like you are trying to build something fancy when you don't know what kind of hammer to use. Try out the tools first then find your preference before attempting to make something :)

Not at all, I planned what I wanted to do when I was in secondary school because i wanted to get away from the chav infested north, gave up on friends etc because I realised everyone up there would just hold me back and my family has no money at all to fall back on. Eventually moved south for uni, which I put enough effort into to do well and also put money aside where I could so I could pay rent when I graduated in case I didn't get a job rather than spending it on clothes and shopping at pricey supermarkets / buying meat.
Applied for everything I could and ended up getting a shitty data entry job. Jumped ship into an awful dev company at the first chance and from then it was easier because of having experience (you are right about that).
You have to put some effort in and it's easy to fuck up your life from wasting time as a teenager, which has brought us full circle back to the original point of the thread :)
