>youtube's most popular videos of the day used to be shit like the typical skit youtubers and the random quirky videos that made it popular
>now it's just latenight garbage, political "notbrainwashing" comedy shows, music videos, and movie trailers
These were the days man. The Internet seemed like a vast wonderland with limitless potential.
Now it's heavily regulated and anonymity is gone, people are getting arrested for posts for God's sake.
You could never portscan late into the night, exploring or causing havoc to whoever was unlucky enough to get your ping these days. One more address block, one more box of pizza rolls, swapping the hottest files on irc and winmx, finding a full 480p porn video, buckle up and pray nobody calls, it's morning, sorry mom, long night studying.

I was finishing my physics degree. I was home that day since I was feeling sick. I was eating a large bowl of cereal. When I turned on my tv I burst into such laughter that milk got all over my carpet. When I saw the jumpers on live TV, oh my Lord, I was on the floor doubled over with pain from laughter. For the next few weeks when it was brought up I had to excuse myself and go to the bathroom and laugh hysterically.
Even today I get a hearty chuckle out of it.

I was 9. Life was hard, I lived in a old trailer and was alone most of the day and bullied in school. Things got better after aside from 2010 where I lost half my family.
In med school now and impotent despite looking like a Chad now so its a weird feeling.
Life doesn't get better or worse. The effort it requires just changes.
I was deployed in Iraqi Kurdistan for almost all of 2000 helping support the No-Fly Zone and collecting HUMINT with 75th Rangers RRD Team 2 (ISA, RRD[now RRC], USASF. CAG and other SOF never fully left Iraq, after the Gulf War). I would have rather been home with my Wife; I was rotated back in after only being married for two weeks(not much of a Honeymoon).

Their mistake was settling with Metallica and Dre. I'm sure they just saw it as an easy way to get them of their backs, but it opened the floodgates for anybody to sue them and get free money because they'd shown they wouldn't put up a fight.
All they did was provide a peer to peer file-sharing service, what people used that for wasn't their business or problem.

I am and I can tell you with certainty that nobody knows. It is one of the few "unanswerable" questions that they teach you in engineering school, like "is evolution real" and "what is your favorite tv show" there is no real answer. Maybe. Maybe it can melt steel. Maybe steel can melt jet fuel. How can anyone be sure? I imagine jet fuel might even be able to freeze steel if it was cold enough outside. It's a silly question, and certainly I wouldn't waste much time thinking about it. Make up your own mind, that is the beauty of science you can believe whatever you want!

I've always been a technology snob, so I'm okay with the current state of the internet as my download speed is 10x what it used to be, my web browsers instantly load since I made sure to get a good processor, and my monitors' resolution is much higher than it used to be.
Plus there is way more information on the internet in comparison to 10 years ago/the information is much more refined. I remember when teachers made fun of wikipedia for being historically inaccurate, but I used wikipedia as a secondary information source/branching off point for a college history course 5 years after this and got high marks on all of my papers.

I have terrible Knees and Lumbar Spine from the Army being 82nd AB, 3/75th/75th RRD and USASF. I was almost killed in HAHO accident when my chute cords got wrapped around my Neck at 37,000 feet. You're close. Everything is faster there is more of it but it's less free. OP is hinting at the unlimited freedom that napster suggested. There was a pivot point where the internet almost connected us all. Lawyers, corporations, and gov'ts reacted strongly. The real question is: what if, in 2000, the true freedom of the internet shone through fully and forever?

Before 9-11 it was idyllic and that's not just the childhood talking. People whose 'loss of innocence' happened before 9-11 recognize the paradigm shift, remember a boomer or gen Xer describing this quaint hollywood style upbringing where he could take his girlfriend to the airport as a date, the two just walk onto planes waiting for the next flight and the stewardesses would bring them cookies/candy and they'd pretend to be jet-setting to Paris. Then the flight control guy goes "hey kids cmon up top we'll show you all this neat flight control stuff :DD" and they can go up there. It's not all the fault of Islamists but I still feel like the maxim that "We have to live like prisoners so that Muslims can live free among us" is true. And bullshit to the claim that "if we didn't over-react and didn't fear them we would be fine". If not for the intelligence and security we'd have had tens of thousands killed by them by now. They were plotting to blow up a bunch of jets over the pacific prior to 9-11.
>>128231461

These existed forever tho. Grandpa and his buddies hated niggers back in the 50's. But back then niggers were confined to their coon towns.
When everyone was white and prosperous, people felt safe enough to relax, and comfortable with everyone they met to be socially shameless.
Now niggers are everywhere, the guy behind the counter is a poo in the loo who doesn't speak English, if you tell a girl she looks nice today you'll be charged for sexual harassment, etc.

The ONLY difference ive noticed between now and back then is Smartphones. And thats a bad thing.
It was better when "apps" was something you ran on a Laptop.
Or the smart(er) phones that were coming out after that had the apps pre-baked into the phone's architecture. With refined coding and integrated device efficiency that only failed because of fluke lightning strikes or cell tower shit.
Other than that the PS2 came out and that was the best console ever made. All the ones since then are basically "that" but with a bunch of unnecessary shit. It would've been better to stick to buying discs at gamestop.
> web blogging technology
Listen all the fancy fonts and graphic design are things they could have integrated way back then but nobody had the balls to do it. Somehow eventually people got around to it, but that doesn't mean thats an advancement inherent to our day and age.
> technology
Porn got better, higher quality images, Tube sites came out hosting longer videos than just the 10-20 sec clips that free sites had back then. USB drives got big enough to hold it too.
And Wifi came around so that you didnt have to plug a ethernet cable into your laptop to get internet out in public.
NONE of this is really all that earth shattering.
Compare that to the difference between 1990 and 2007... virtually no computers except database machines at offices and no cell phones at all. Went to laptops and early smartphones.
Compare that to the difference between 1980 and 1997... went from the dark ages practically... to having computers, stealth bombers, and computer graphics for movies that were good enough to make entire movies around it.

Everything has gone downhill on the internet and the free culture. Ghetto, walled-garden sites like fb, constant surveillance from google to fb to everyone, totally controlled mobiles that HW wise are great, but SW side they are the big brother of big brother, usurpation of Free Software goodness by Open Source scam, entry of huge control, propaganda and eradication of real free speech. /pol/ was the default on everything. Now it's islands here and there under constant attack. In two words, the situation has gone to total shit.
It was a glorious time to be 12 years old on the internet, I'll say that much.

The year 2000 was not a perfect time but it was still a simpler, easier, happier and more innocent time not only for me, but also for the rest of the world in general. I was 12 years old and in my final year of primary school back in the year 2000.
The 90s was the last truly good decade, ESPECIALLY in terms of the internet. I remember having to endure shitty dial-up back in the 90s, but I'd still love to go back to the internet from the 90s but with the faster internet speed I have now. There was less social media normie SJW faggotry in that era, more anonymity and more creativity. There were more forums and more web-sites in general. Everything was less streamlined. Everything was bigger, more mysterious, more colourful, more customisable, more romantic and more vibrant. Fuck, I'm getting teary-eyed now.

Early 90's eastern European pop and rock are strange hybrid between their 10 year old western equivalents and folk music that was allowed in eastern block during communism.
J.M.K.E and Laibach some of very few bands ex-commie countries that immediately integrated to western equivalent genres. Probably due to closeness to non-commie countries and ability to listen their radio stations.

Only downside about Q2 was the Shotgun or Machinegun, they were pretty superfluous. They could've just went with the SSG and Chain and played it straight. I would've been fine with that, even if they were nerfed a little, its not like you use much else besides the Rail/Rocket later on.

I remember my first (own) computer that came with Windows ME on it had the "Music" sound drivers fucked up on it without any ability to fix it.
So I went without hearing music in Fallout 1 and 2 for about 9 months, though the Sound Effects worked just fine.
(I had the box set FO1 and FO2 so I got them both at the same time)
CD Audio worked just fine because that was a different kind of sound driver.
So my soundtrack to Fallout 1 and 2 guess what it was - Pink Floyd Dark Side of The Moon.
"Us and Them" and "Any Colour You Like" somehow matched the feel and atmosphere of FO so well I felt like it was memories of some other life I had.
And pic related is somehow still my most favorite video game weapon. Because of just how satisfying it felt in FO1 to get my hands on it for the first time (in the Glow I believe). And manage to haul it along with all the other junk out of that place.

Video playback, and phones having cameras now, is about the only marked improvement.
> 80s and 90s were better than both
This. Things had alot more imperfections back then, were more rigid and less adaptable, but shit was so damn Original at the same time too.
>>128280993
Unfortunately I had to agree at the time with this and I still think its the case.
If there were any building demolition equipment used in WTC 1 and WTC 2 it only would have had to be used in the specific area where the "planes hit" because thats where the integrity was compromised.
Then you have the sheer weight of the entire building above it pressing down, and it can pancake one floor after another after another.
Its kinda like heating up plastic, 150 degrees might not melt plastic (300 degree melting point?) but it'll sure warp it and that allows you to apply force to change it.
WTC 7 was a building implosion All The Way though. No way that entire building just starts falling from the bottom and middle at the same time, from some hurr-dee-durr burning debris falling on top of it.
> I DO Believe there was a micro-nuke explosion in WTC 1 and WTC 2 though. Something small like about the same strength as that FOAB the russians have.
> The fireball is far too bright yellow/hot coming out the sides of the building to have been jet fuel. Jet fuel burning is reddish orange color at best.

>Lyrics sounds like typical folks song and singer also speaks folkish dialect. I guess since you probably don't speak Polish song itself sounds closer to regular rock. Here's another one.
Thinking about stuff that was going around in western rock music in 70's like classic rock'n'roll revival, garage rock, proto-punk and so add the filter that only few people that could easily access more global music market it makes sense that there is lag few years to decade and isolation that may amplify that lag. First wave folk-rock was mostly 60's thing in west.
The reason why I posted Laibach (Slovenian band) and JMKE (Estonian band) as examples of bands that were already completely connected to western cultural mainstream is the fact that both had access to western radio and TV. It is kinda funny how western movies and TV-shows spread to Russia in 80's. They could watch and record Finnish TV. One Russian guy would dub fucking everything and then they would make more copies of that dubbed copy... with degrading quality every single time.
Picture and video kinda related. One of the most subversive western propagandists. Finnish commercials were bit demoralizing for Soviets and KGB went quite lengths in explaining that commercials were lies and products of concentrated propaganda effort funded by CIA. Naturally those were exactly that but not exactly aimed at subverting Estonians and Russians living near Finnish border.

It's not "seen" as bad, it's reported as bad.
Because news stations are located in rich cities, and staffed by professional gossipers. Any working-class issue is derided and ignored.
There was a survey of 10 western-European countries last year regarding Islam in Europe, 8/10 of the countries surveyed returned majority support for the statement "Muslim immigration should be prohibited".
The only two countries which returned a minority for that question were Germany and the UK. In the UK, 47% of respondents supported banning muslim immigration.
Imagine the news reporting that.

I had a similar problem as our private estate used fibre optic, but it was "the wrong type of fibre optic" (whatever the fuck that means), they actually had to downgrade us to copper to provide ADSL in 2008.
From 2003 - 2007 I actually had a 0.8 metre (31.5 inch) satellite dish on the roof peered with a 56kb uplink and 300kbps downlink from an Italian Satellite Broadband Internet supplier for about $300 a year, which was bloody cheap.
Dropped them when ADSL was installed though as ADSL was far more reliable and bandwidth was 500kbps +.
Still took forever to download movies over Limewire / Frostwire though.
>>128283603
$300 a year was bloody cheap, the DSL line here in my area was $40 per month and it was the only choice (which comes out to 480/yr).
I forget how much a T-1 line was back then but it was the only alternative I think. Satellite internet wasnt a thing over here at least until Cable internet came out (?2008)
There was a rich dude in my town who had a T-1 line (as well as a power generating windmill above his house). Our high school had a T-3.
>>128282646
ISDN had digital modulation, it used single line but it could carry two channels in it. One for phone and other for modem or two for either. Each channel was symmetric 64 kbit/s, most home users had 128kbit/s. There was less common heavier duty broadband versions for mostly corporate users, if I recall correctly it was 384kbit/s and even higher tier version was up to 1984 kbit/s, it didn't go 2048 due to having to reserve one channel to ISP diagnostics and shieet.

The pre AOL /eternal september days were nothing like 4chan, and even after that 4chan is a real shit fest compared to what IRC and messages boards were like in the early days.
However, there is a certain mentality that is different here that makes it feel a bit more old internet
4chan has it's own etiquette, eg. it's bad etiquette if you get all angry and offended if someone calls you a fag, in RL obviously the opposite is true. That makes it feel a bit more old internet.

>Maybe it's hindsight bias but I swear fucking pub counterstrike servers circa 2000-2003 were far more civil and chill than today. No cluch or ban, no league tier faggotry. You would curse and shit at eachother but people weren't so fucking asinine. Swear the chill time I experienced in online games was up to 2010. It isn't awful since then but it's noticably worse than before.
Higher bar of entry to most games. Installing game, configuring it, finding servers and connecting to server took bit more effort than these days. Hax0rs could be a bane, but back then many public clan servers had almost permanent admin presence. Gaming communities were much smaller. Lots of L2P banter, but it was generally friendly. Shit even TF2 was much better while after launch than it is now when it comes to spirit of community.

Dude remember the guys spraying porn gifs on the walls? Shit was fucking lit
The only thing that is a flat out improvement is TV and home theater. HD is x1000 better than the old CRT TV sets. What we have now is a quantum leap beyond what we had in the early 90's. Both for personal enjoyment and porn needs.
Other than that, the 90's really were the last best decade of the USA. While the general industry plants had died off in the late 70's, we still had substantial service and high end product production jobs. IT/Computer jobs were the future of most of America until they were outsourced badly starting in the 00's.
Nowadays, shitty retail and shitty service jobs are the pinnacle of many parts of America. In conjunction with globalization, it's now become increasingly hard and expensive to even afford the basic things like a home and starting a small family.
Also, the media is also FAR more editorial based. Yes, it has always had an opinion/bias through modern publishing, but it's gone full stop since the adoption of full time TV news stations.

>HD is x1000 better than the old CRT TV sets
Disagreed. The picture is worse than NTSC in many cases because the broadcasters and cable companies re-compress the stream. Even with a full bandwidth stream you have to sit closer than two screen diagonals to even see the difference between SD and HD with 20/20 vision.

I don't know, some of the stuff that was posted on the alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.* sub-groups was pretty fucked up.
That was where I saw my first seep.
I saw my first Internet porn on there back in late '94, I can still see the picture of two naked Japanese girls kissing burned on the back of my retina.
Good times man, good times.

Agreed.
4chan is merely the spiritual successor to internet 1.0.
The Times may cgange, but the anonymous shitposting never does.
Stay fucking awesome you anons. You're the last of the free internet.

I think the rise of the internet destroyed society.

Maybe if you are a stereotypical sedentary amerifat. Get a physical hobby, eat nutrient rich foods, and enjoy health into your 70's.

Advertising has become slicker. Corporate tactics as well. People have commodified themselves and many market themselves as a product almost. The average person today is far more self-conscious now than in the past. This is not good because this used to be a problem for neurotic people only. A lot of people are immersed in their phones or blocking out everything while wearing headphones. Staring at the phone wherever they are. Hell, you see families at a restaurant with everyone staring at their smartphone. I often see couples sitting somewhere with both diddling on their phone.
Also, the ubiquity of cameras and the internet does not make for a good combination for natural interaction. It's basically nonstop surveillance. Instead of being on someone's home video, you're on YouTube.
Soon we'll have inescapable facial detection that will make this even worse.
>>128296986
I'll have to respectfully disagree. Broadcast generally is superior in signal quality to what we had.
Also, modern day Blu-ray and 4k Blu-ray and well beyond anything old VHS magnetic tape could do.

He was talking about 2007 you nigger
>>128265136
I would, the early 90s were so innocent and virtuous compared to the isolating degeneracy that most of our lives have become. The internet is both the best and worst thing that happened to society

>The pre AOL /eternal september days were nothing like 4chan, and even after that 4chan is a real shit fest compared to what IRC and messages boards were like in the early days.
I got my first touch to intertubes in 1995 or so I came after eternal september, but in nineties internet was much more free, anarchistic and civilized.
>However, there is a certain mentality that is different here that makes it feel a bit more old internet
You can basically post anything here within loose rules, like in most newsgroups and mailing lists. I see *chans as sort of threaded IRC with built in picture hosting. Less fear of getting fired from job by some idiot than in Shekelbook and overseer profiling everything for optimized ads. This still anarchistic, even if we lack newsgroup or mailing list discussions lasting for months or years. Those things got mostly killed by spammers in late 90's and early 2000's.
>>128297014
>4chan is merely the spiritual successor to internet 1.0.
I see chans as internet 3.0. Internet 1.0 was useful information and mostly civilized discussions on archaic platforms. 1.5 came with forums and easy picture hosting, replacing newsgroups killed by spammers. Internet 2.0 was so called over commercialized social media. Intertubes 3.0 is anti-social media.

Early 720i HD-VHS on early CRT widescreen TV had better black than most of current monitors. Quality of video content has gone down as hollywood killed the creative and experienced middle budget movies. Now we have left massive blockbuster schlock and indies that usually get things 70% right with limited budget.

True.

(((Social media)))
Feminism wasn't a thing but women were heavy into party culture.
People were more worried about Asian immigrates than Islamic ones.
The economy was OK but people still hated affirmative action.
Some protestant Christian groups were the enemy of free speech but unlike SJW is was ok to publicly hate them.
There was no BLM and white quilt wasn't was strong but wigger culture was at it's peak.
Overall I would say it wasn't as bad as it is today but it was still pretty bad.

Welcome to pan-opticon.
Why did the joos started to get heavy on Cultural Marxism sometime during the 00's? I'm a young folk but I still can remamber a world without a million different genders.

I'm not talking about the cheap Vizio shit. I'm referring to a quality OLED screen. Being really cheap in the 90's meant that you could easily end up with a black and white TV in certain areas. (I remember my local electronic store still sold old B&W sets until the mid 90's)
I agree that modern films are in dire straights, but you can't ignore how many older classic films have made the jump to HD with Blu-ray.
>>128229853
Shittier internet, but in a way more fun, like the wild west. Never knew what you were actually downloading. People didn't talk about terrorism constantly.
>Ebaums

The idea of being able to access virtually all of recorded human content with my thumb was something that I would have laughed off.

I find the digital breakup and pixelation of broadcast media to be annoying.
Fortunately I now get most of my stuff downloaded in full in digital format so digital breakup is no longer a problem for me personally.
Thank you Bay of Pirates and KAT (sadly RIP)

Lots of people have fond memories of the 90s, practically no one has fond memories of the 00s.
>>128299035
Too soon, comeback here in 2025, there will be plenty of 90s babies glorifying the 00s.

It used VHS tape, but digital packing. High end stuff I saw as test user in HDTV-lab at university of technology. Bit clunkier to use. Quality was perfect. Sure there are cheap and stuff, but high end hasn't changed that radically.

the 90's was the last of originality of western culture. Everything after that was a remake from the 50's to the 90's. There was nothing original in the 10's
Everything is a remake

80's ended like in 1994. Iinfinite reshashing past began gradually in early 90's. It got worse in late 90's.
