Jacksonville is a Republican stronghold and the uni is known for it's international business and nursing programs, so I assume that's why.

As someone who moved across the country for grad school, my biggest piece of advice is this: most programs for science and engineering are basically the same, especially for undergraduate programs. The physics, math, and engineering they teach at MIT or Harvard is the same as the physics, math, and engineering they teach at Noname College in Smallville. What's really important to look for in a school you're moving long distance for is

1) What are the facilities and research opportunities like? Is this a place where I could segue into a graduate program or a research internship? Are they doing research that I'm interested in?

2) What's the cost of living like? Is this a place where I can find a decent job to work while I'm in school and will it afford me a comfortable living there? Or am I going to spend the next four years surviving off of ramen and wellness kitchen meals?

3) What's the campus/city like? Are the people nice? Am I going to get along with these people for four years or am I going to lose my mind after six months? Is the weather tolerable? Is it safe? Is it comfy? Is there stuff to do in the surrounding area?


When I applied for my PhD program I got accepted at three schools - a major university in a big city, an ivy league school in an isolated Northeastern town, and a less well-known college in a smaller town. The big city school was expensive and crime-ridden. The Ivy League school was prestigious, but was also full of pretentious rich assholes who would have made my life hell. The third school had really nice faculty, interesting research opportunities, and I could afford to live their comfortably on my stipend.

Remember that, realistically, very few people you're likely to intern with or apply for work with are going to give a shit *where* you got your degree, only that you got it.
