Allies were still the good guys, so not sure how this spread communism. If anything, it reinforced the commies are bad cold war stigma. I know it's what got me all patriotic growing up. Listened to that soundtrack on loop while prepping for basic.

I enjoyed the first Red Alert as a kid in the 90s, but RA2/Yuri's Revenge was the height of the series imho. Never really got into Tiberian Sun, will need to give it a replay someday. I get the attraction to the storyline, but the gameplay felt less polished and entertaining than RA2.

I liked the Flak Troopers who were chained to their cannons. It's fun to play as the Russians for the same reason it's fun to play as the imperial guard, they are fucked and their chances are either win or die horribly

What someone said about "cartoony" makes sense.

On one hand its full of stylish propaganda about the efficiency, and even bizarre sexual appeal of having a communist state (top notch commie assassin girl).

However even having all the units colored Red, which is kinda annoying to look at, subconsciously tells you that you're playing the bad guys.

And they dont have a cause to fight for like NOD does, its just the state machine, and the only good units the Soviets have likewise tend to be Machines, Vehicles, or mutated/cyborg'd soldiers.

It puts some distance from the humanity of it, and in RA2 it even says the conscripts are neatly disposable.

I think if it was a Wolfenstein esque "hitler won" kind of timeline and you were fighting the nazis, which im not sure would have been a bad way to go with the first side-branch of C&C games...

Fact is some people are impressionable, but they'll get that from anywhere including movies. If Doom wasnt as violent or plot deprived as it was, people would say Terminator 2 made kids shoot up schools.

Though I will say that the lack of some units for the Allies - like the Mammoth Tank being a soviet one instead, made the Allies faction seem just a tad weak and lackluster (made up only by resource efficiency and combined arms)

Pic related I kid you not... the sexy elite guard from RTCW (and strangely, eating sausages+cheese crackers off of tables) in that game actually got ME sorta interested into looking into what NS was about.

So RTCW in some ways made me a little more open to becoming a nazi frog.

The thing that made tib sun stand out was the atmospheer in the game. The alien like earth corrupted by tiberium, the eery music that makes it feels like there is an impending doom and the outstanding GDI and Nod factions.

RA2 is one of the best rts games ever made.
Let me guess, you only played the single player campaigns.
It actually held the world record for longest running online multiplayer game for a while, and I believe you can still play online to this day.
For every unit there was a counter, even with all the specialist units for all the allied and soviet nations, it was in near perfect balance.
I wish I could go back to those times, many good times were had.

I still say the best one was C&C. For some reason, no game was able to improve the athmosphere of "real war" that game had. It was very immersive. And that's probably the thing I valuate the most in a game. Graphics, storyline, gameplay, etc, are just tools to achieve that. If you don't, the game fails, even if everything is great. That's my opinion.

Cruisers were OP, you could cannonball half the map with a naval campaign.

Indeed and the semi-advanced tech in the game, which even the ground units possessed, was this weird cyberpunk kind of feel (the combat aspect of cyberpunk anyway) without making it too overboard with tech level to make you wonder why they weren't living in starships at that point.

On one hand it was cool AF but on the other hand you could see how the deteriorating landscape was dangerous enough that humanity was barely getting away with it.

It looks like a cool place to live, with all those awesome anarchistic homes that are often in the way of your warpath where you can just live off the grid.

Though the writing on the wall, being even in the best zones a sense of creeping doom says you're not going to live to see your elder years since tiberium is killing everything.

In red alert 1 yeah they were and I loved them for that. Made some assaults easier because of all that range.

But they got nerfed all to hell in RA2. The soviet cruise missile boats were OP but they were balanced by having shit viewing. If you just couldn't get some area looked at (usually ip on top of cliffs) then it was kinda safe against the missiles. And the missiles could be shot down, which meant you'd have to dogpile a bunch of boats just to make sure a couple got through to destroy the defenses.
