Ted just ROASTED the fuck out of Elon Musk
>>
>>128100744
http://www.autoblog.com/2010/02/15/tesla-ceo-musk-used-private-jet-12-times-to-lobby-washington-for/

>Musk flew to Washington D.C. at least a dozen times since early 2009 to help make the case to the Department of Energy for nearly half a billion dollars in low interest loans as part of the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing program. Without the loan money, it seems unlikely that Tesla would have remained solvent long enough to bring the Model S to fruition. Anything that benefits a company, benefits its shareholders – in this case the biggest beneficiary (who owns 38.8 percent of the company's shares) of Tesla's success will, of course, be Musk himself.

It doesn't matter. The problem is not Elon Musk flying. It's everybody flying. Just price in the actual externality costs of flying through the use of a carbon tax.

Commercial air travel is probably the single most damaging action that an individual can take when it comes to CO2 emmisions. If we can price out 90% of the population from being able to engage in it, significant progress could be made in mitigating global warming.

Also, fuck electric cars. We don't have the battery technology to make electric vehicles viable for most of the transportation industry, AKA tractor-trailers.

>>
>>128106075

And? Even one person's plane is still a drop in the bucket compared to the number of commercial flights in the USA everyday.

It doesn't matter. Price discrimination is the best way to deal with these kinds of problems. Just enact a carbon tax. If billionaires want to pay through the nose to be somewhere in 1 hour by plane instead of 4 by train, then who the fuck cares? As long are you are paying for the cost in CO2 terms, it literally does not matter what you personally do.

You'd think someone like Ted Cruz, who would suck the market's cock if it had one would understand this, but I guess this is just further proof of how much of a pandering fucking retard he really is.
>>
>>128105755
It kills livelihoods for the betterment of mankind. Sorry but I don't give a fuck about some truck drivers who dropped out of high school and refused to get an actual skill. Driving isn't a fucking skill. We all do it.

And what will happen will be there will be multiple roads at first. Some for driverless cars and some for people who wish to drive themselves. Your lane will just be more dangerous and slower. And cost more too. You'll eventually give in and go driverless too.

Sorry bud if you're a truck driver but I'd recommend you get a new trade asap.

Musk is in the right though, just like Trump was in the right about uneven multilateral trade deals.

Trump was criticized for making hats, clothes, and other products outside of the USA while he was out on the campaign trail criticizing outsourcing and unfair trade deals. In Trump's mind, capitalism forces his hand to always minimize expenses in order to maximize profits. If he doesn't manufacture his clothes in China (or wherever), other American companies will step in, do the exact same thing, and overtake him. Then his business will be edged off the margins and go bankrupt because he can't compete.

It is for this reason that when "sinking to the bottom" (e.g. outsourcing) is has external costs or otherwise repugnant ramifications, -everyone- involved must be prevented from resorting to such behavior. That's why the only way to get around outsourcing is to blanket-penalize anyone who does so; ethically opposing it as an individual CEO is just going to get you gobbled up.

Just like Trump was not in the wrong to point this out, criticizing Musk for flying a private jet while pushing for stronger climate change laws is not a problem. He wants everyone to be penalized, then he'll follow the law. Just like Trump and protectionism.

Because it's fucking progress for businesses AND every common buyer. We will get cheaper goods this way. Seriously this happens to every fucking old job. As we progress in technology we lose old jobs. People will adapt and they will be taken care of if they're too old. But seriously it's not worth stopping us from having automatic traveling and goods transportation just to so truck drivers and some Indian taxi drivers have their jobs. New jobs will be created.

And they will only outlaw it if we let them. As I said the solution will at first be separate lanes. There's no way you can combat this unless you want to ban them and then America can't compete globally because you know other countries won't ban them. It's the exact reason why we're not getting rid of fossil fuels. By using them we get economic advantages since our competition does too. It isn't about saving their jobs. I know that's hard to hear but it's true.

We've had a revolution where we replaced physical labor, so we changed our jobs, but now it's intellect we're having automated. When we've got automated physical power and intellect there's really not many jobs left to do, now is there?

I never claimed it was a necessity you dumbass, so clearly you didn't comprehend the comparison to Trump.

Manufacturing clothes in Bangladesh is not necessary. Manufacturing hats in China is not necessary. Taking a private jet to see the Department of Energy is not necessary. These can all be done in different locations or via different means.

What is necessary, however, is an equal playing field, not just for someone who believes outsourcing to be harmful for our country, or climate change to be harmful to our country. If either Trump or Musk were to "walk the walk" while talking the talk, they'd go bankrupt and then their voices would be silent and gone, completely nullifying any work they put forth ending outsourcing/climate change.

That you haven't realized this is beyond me. You don't win by getting knocked out, unlike your PM argues.

>>128108064

> can't even understand the argument

Literally, what he does it not important, because it's not an individual problem, it's a systemic problem.

The problem is not a few billionaires jetting around, it is everybody taking flights and not paying for the true cost of their CO2 emissions.

If we had a price on carbon, most flights would no longer happen anymore, and the few billionaires who are still flying would have already paid for the carbon emissions they generated by flying via the tax so it would be a non-issue.
>>
>>128109121
Yes it is necessary, it's not realistically possible to compete with other distributors unless you're labor costs are similar (unless you target a hippy crowd that will buy your product just because), basic capitalism.

Elon has no reason to use a private jet. He would be justified to use an electric grid running on coal/oil/natural gas if his competitors do, but not vanity bullshit if he truly believes in it.
I don't think human languages in history developed a word suitable to describe your retardation in making such a bad comparison. I probably shouldn't bother.

Oh please, there's no chance of self-driving cars going mainstream in any of our lifetimes.

- 5 to 10 years minimum for the tech to get anywhere near consumer-grade.
- 20 years at least from the first production models for it to come down in price to the point where average people can afford it (adaptive cruise control has been a thing for longer than that and is still a luxury option)
- 10+ years after that for cars to propagate into the used car market enough that the regular joes driving $5k beaters can even think about buying one.

Only then can you even BEGIN to think about outlawing regular cars.

>>128109074
Electric cars have failed over and over. The only new thing Musk brings to the table is a trendy brand name. Tesla lives and dies with Musk's cult of personality.

And going to Mars is absolute fucking horseshit that he's using to boost his public image. A trip to Mars would be utterly unprofitable (so no investors) and much too expensive for him to fund out-of-pocket. There's literally no way it's happening unless he convinces Trump or some future president to give him the $20 billion to do it instead of NASA.

These are simply store locations, not even R&D or manufacturing.

https://www.tesla.com/about
According to this, they have at least one in Fremont, CA

https://evannex.com/blogs/news/innovation-culture-tesla-r-d-spending-versus-other-automakers
R&D has to be somewhere at a 17% rate but I don't see any locations. It just says generic "Silicon Valley," so let's just assume the Bay Area is yet another location

http://www.spacex.com/about
SpaceX thankfully is a lot cleaner. The map at the bottom of the page shows 3 launch facilities across 3 states, 4 offices across 3 states, 1 HQ, and one "development facility" which I presume is their R&D. All in all that's 5 different states all spread across the country from coast to coast.

Good luck using a commercial jet to do that. If Musk is campaigning for carbon credits or whatever, he's clearly willing to pay a higher price on himself. But only when others are penalized/taxed equally.

you realize Tesla is subsidized right, the US government is subsidizing like 80% of the manufacturing costs of Tesla vehicles either through direct funding or tax exceptions.

The idea is to essentially try and "jump start" the industry by giving these breaks up front until Tesla is finally self sufficient and where their cars become widespread and mainstream across America. Until that happens Tesla is nothing but a financial black hole burdening the tax payers, but they don't advertise that part do they?

Get your head out of your stinky ass and read a book kid, I can't be arsed to keep helping people like you become more enlightened.
