Look at things from their perspective, particularly that of leftists in the US: for the past 8 years, they became drunk on thoughts that the US was became more and more progressive. They were smug, and assumed that Hillary would win in an enormous landslide.

Then the election happened, and their dreams were shattered. Even now, they're writhing in emotional pain from what they regard as the greatest tragedy of their lifetimes. Everything they say and do in regards to Trump is an act of defense against the reality that the tide has turned against leftism.

Every time they act smug or triumphant, they're trying to escape from the pain. When it's something as absurd as a typo in a tweet, it reveals just how desperate they are for any sign that Trump is failing and that things will go back to "normal" (by their standards, anyway) by 2018, or 2020 at the latest.

The author is one of the few leftist journalists who actually accepts how dire things are for their side. And yet, when he tries to tell his fellow leftists the truth, they angrily accuse him of being an unhelpful contrarian. They don't want to hear about how bad things are for them, and that they need to make sacrifices to fix it; they want to hear that this is all just a phase and that Trump is failing so utterly that 2018 and 2020 will be shoo-ins for Democrat candidates.

That is why they are making such a big deal out of covfefe.
