I am quite familiar with the Roman perspective on "foreign" gods, and there are generally two strategies they employed:

1. If they are functionally identical (both, say, gods of fertility) then they ARE the same god, just worshiped differently.
2. If they are "unknown" gods (with a domain not previously occupied by a "known" one in the pantheon) then they can be integrated without problems.

Roman religion was more of a formal one: what was important was that you executed the necessary rituals with deference and impeccably. Sources detail the rituals extensively, and specify if it must be done in the "roman" way or the "greek" way.
I am deeply convinced that if you really want to revive paganism, at least take the roman version, since it's probably the closest one to platonism - barring Christian theology.
