I used to think the same way but I was bored out of my mind and needed a change even if it meant being chimped on. Although I still spend most of my time with shades down on the puter. Turns out city is not so bad as long as you make sure the area isn't bad. Make sure to check the place in the evening, if its a nog neighborhood they are all over the street you can't miss it.
For the most part north or west of downtown seems good from what I've seen. If heading South, get off by Cermak/Chinatown or your life is forfeit.
