Vocational/specialty - 2nd

So let's say you are D/F student, you go to 3/4. All your A/Bs go to 1/2. What's worse is that since they have choice of whatever school they want, there are kids who pass 2-7 high schools on their way to the same level school that is down the street from their house.
Why is this bad? Well imagine a shit tier troubled student who heads out every day from Bentalou and EDMONDSON - sand town- to go to Booker T Washington off Perron parkway. This troublemaker will pass: Carver, August Fells Savage, Vivian T Thomas, Fredrick Douglas, Digital Harbor - the Gates Foundation Money pit- ACCE, Reach, Merganthaler Vocational to get to their school, and take three buses. He will be late everyday, his parents will never trek up to the school, there is no support structure through the neighborhood for him, the community around the school cares not for him and he cares not for the community.
We export trouble all over the city.
In 2015 a kid was literally curbed stomped at Douglass.
The Principals all steal money so we get left with crazies and burnouts.

I recently taught at a nearly all black school. In the brief time I was there we have had 5 principals, because until recently they couldn't find a permanent one that wanted it.

The school is a complete clusterfuck. I am glad to be out with my life and my career is almost even over before it's began due to some things that happened beyond my control.

Kids wander the hallways, we had 17 long term substitutes for vacant positions, constant fights. The problem is that schools only really offer the illusion of control and if the kids don't buy into it they will run the asylum, and they do. They know they can do anything and get passed, they know that they will end up in prison or working minimum wage job, and they know it's the white man's fault.

Black schools are just junior prisons and if some blacks come out pacified enough to work at mcdonald's then they are good enough. Black schools are dangerous and you need to avoid them at all costs.

No one in the public knows how bad it is because if they speak out they will be retributed against and won't get another job. For administrators it's all about image.

I should add here with a caveat that one thing white people don't realize is the visceral hatred that a majority of the black population has for us. Yeah that's a black majority school district in a nutshell. I worked almost 10 years in the Metro-Atlanta school system before giving up and going into another career for less pay and more sanity.

There's a world of merry-go-round excuses: family involvement, administrative corruption, low expectations, etc. etc. The problem with all of them is the same thing: Blacks CREATED these problems themselves. Black administrators lie, cheat, and steal while being largely shielded from the law. Black parents refuse to get involved 90% of the time. Black students' overall performance decade after decade gave rise to those low expectations.

There's just no way around it. No amount of funding makes these problems go away. No amount of public social work improves their family life. No amount of pretend expectations makes the students work harder. No amount of accountability makes the administrators honest. They just stack the deck with more cries of discrimination and continue along the same road time and again.

The only solution is to simply stop trying to address the problem. Any schools with public money should be local. Any students who totally fail out should be left to their ignorance. Admin at all levels should be abolished in favor of ad hoc localism.

And after all that is done, you're going to get the same results, but at least you'll have more money for the things black communities really need which are birth-control, police, and prisons.

Actually we just sold our actual orchard and evaporator and tanks. Value added and retail sales going so strong (I'm good at sales) what we harvest in a year only lasts 1 month of sales so we bought a better place with a barn that'll work better for just packaging, storing, shipping. I buy by the barrel from friends I made in the business; they can have the uncertainty of boom or bust harvests and I can cherry pick the best product to sell to our customers on the retail level.

Not going to say much more about location or specifics of our niche product (don't need to dox myself), but I'm in a state with almost zero diversity. I used to do an online retail business and the farm was just going to be enough to pay the property tax on a big piece of land, but it took on a life of its own and it's nearly full time work processing, packaging, and shipping. This year we're going to do more in sales than we have the past 6 combined so it'll be a good income with a couple more years of the growth we've been seeing and with no debt we are well positioned to weather any bumps in the road.

It is a fantastic business though.. really any farming is. Farmers are just good, helpful, hard working folks. Seriously though, off to bed now.

I do think suspension is an outdated punishment, though. Suspension basically means "Keep your disruptive kid at home for a day so that everyone else can learn". That works great if you've got a stay-at-home mom providing discipline, but with two (or one) working parents it's just a day off for the kid. And there are very few stay-at-home parents anymore.

The real question is that if teachers can't teach a kid, and parents can't teach a kid, then who the fuck is supposed to teach the kid?

Public schools are ridiculously wasteful. I remember late in my high school career, the school purchased 8 wall-mounted flatscreen TVs for the cafeteria. The purpose was to broadcast the announcements, but the acoustics were so bad you couldn't hear anything. 99% of the time they just showed a clock, if anyone bothered turning them on at all.

I asked some of the teachers about it, and according to them the TVs were bought with a tech grant that would have been reassigned if we didn't spend the money. But that money could have easily been spent on classroom materials, building maintenance, or even bonuses for high-performing teachers.

In other words, we wasted hundreds (possibly thousands) of dollars on TVs that benefited nobody, so that those thousands of dollars wouldn't be spent somewhere else.

APS has the highest funding in the state and gets the worst overall results. The local paper had a story a few years ago that broke down test scores by race to create "adjusted scores" to better compare the various high schools in the Atlanta area. The most interesting finding was that Grady High School came out near the top in adjusted scores because white students there were outperforming suburban white students significantly. From a raw score perspective however, Grady is trash because the orcs bring it down so much.

As a quick rundown for those unfamiliar with Atlanta, the city itself (not the surrounding MSA that people call Atlanta) is only black and white. Asians and Hispanics live in the suburbs. Also there aren't any white ethnic (Irish, Polish, Italian, etc) neighborhoods in cities like Boston or Philadelphia. The only whites with families are either well educated upper middle class liberals who live on the east side and are zoned for Grady and rich white conservatives who live in the northern part of town and usually send their kids to private schools.

What's happened recently is that the schools have gotten a little bit better for whites in the city because there is a quiet policy of segregation. Elementary schools are zoned by neighborhoods that happen to fall along racial lines. Charter schools specialize in curricula that appeals to one race or have neighborhood preference in their zoning. Middle and high schools use tracking that just so happens to separate the races from each other. It's really interesting because the whole system is ~90% black, so they can get away with throwing whitey a few bones because whitey pays the property taxes that keep the system running.

That's probably part of the problem. Some of the most effective charter schools have been part of the KIPP network and KIPP schools are basically bootcamp combined with school. If you've ever dealt with blacks in a professional environment, then you've probably noticed that they need very detailed instructions and clear expectations for everything they do. Blacks can work in structured systems like the military, repetitive labor, and lower level government jobs, but most are really bad in non-structured environments where they have to be adaptable and self directing.
