I've been agnostic but believed in some kind of higher being since I got out of my edgy preteen atheist phase. I'm fascinated by the history of my people and because of that Pagan faith is really interesting to me. Can you guys point me to some reading I can do on it to understand what human's purpose is in these faiths?

Do the gods still watch the world or did they make it and more or less don't care?

Do the gods love and protect us in the same way Abrahamic gods do? (because that's what got me disillusioned with Catholicism when I was young)

I guess I just want a quick rundown of the faith in the way you can do with Christianity, for example. God makes the world, makes the first people, they fuck up and everyone since then has been making up for their fuck up. Then God sent down his son to Earth who gave up his life to save us. God loves and protects everyone and is all powerful. That sort of thing.

I'm half Irish and Half English if it helps, my English side are from the South-East and I'm pretty sure we have been for a long time.

The two main analogous forms of such devotion/faith that I am aware of are Pure Land Buddhism (Amitabha) and Protestant Christianity ( which still technically requires baptism at the community level). In hinduism such traditions are preceded by initiation and involve specific mantras and offerings. Even Theravada has a refuge ceremony and the ongoing "taking refuge".
So, I guess the closest would be Pure Land Buddhism.

It depends on the deity. A god of war likes war. A god of the harvest like plentiful food. Some gods are more benefical to humans than others. Some are cruel, some are petty.

Polytheistic divinities have smaller areas they control, but far more power in those areas. Fwiw I recommend reading Reality by Kingsley for getting a sense of a possible template or prototype for Helenistic/Hermetic contemplative theory and practice. He advocates and describes the practice of "incubation" - essentially hesychasm or extended silence and immobility in darkness wherein one may receive guidance and blessings from the deity. Yes this practice was incorporated into Eastern Orthodox Christianity but by way of Hermeticism and Helenism nit by Judaism.

All his books kick ass actually.
