I was born in 1991, and I've been recently digitizing my family's old family VHS tapes. As an atheist, why do I not do whatever I want and murder? Well, unlike the believer, who thinks there is only one reason that has nothing to do with the actual consequences of murder, I refrain from killing for a network of intersecting reasons. I don't want to go to jail, I dont want to live in a world of murderers, I want to be liked by people, I want to enjoy life, I want to nurture life, I'm more impressed with creation rather than destruction, etc.

Now, if any one of those reasons were taken away, say it became legal to murder so I wouldnt go to jail. Would I then kill? No, because I still have all those other reasons that make up my personal moral code.

But according the believer, there is only one reason not to kill. Because God says so. Well, what if that changes? What if god tells you to kill, as he has done in the bible?

As an atheist, we understand that reasons inform what we do or dont do. A strict rule in and of itself is not a reason, it's just a statment.

If God exists and has a plan that cannot be altered by human actions, then what does it matter what we do? I could bomb an orphanage and it would be part of god's plan, it's only me that would suffer in hell, but then that means only self preservation matters.

If there is no god, then there is no superman to clean up our messes for us. EVERYTHING we do matters when everything is in OUR hands. If God has all the power, then he has all the responsiblity.
