There is a common theme I've seen here on /pol/ numerous times regarding the years 2007 and 2008. The theme being the somewhat "downfall" of society and the overall "when things started to go bad" sort of thing. Aside from Obama being elected president of the US,(or maybe thats it?) what happened in around 2007/2008 that caused all of this?

Was it social media? How about smartphones becoming the norm, or perhaps the internet in general? Again it seems to be the general consensus that things started going to shit around these years.

If its of any relevance at all, the large hadron collider first started up its Inaugural tests in september of 2008.

Something happened during these two years and I just cant pinpoint it.

Facebook was opened up to non-college students in 06. Facebook and twitter happened.

Don't attack me, this makes you look stupid, bromeohomeo. What you say is true, but things started to get *really* shitty during 07 and 08.

Economic crash of 2008. We are in a depression, maintained with heavy borrowing and money printing. Money lost some of its psychological power that year.

Facebook was opened to the public around late 07. I distinctly remember my college buddies begging me to sign up, and asking them if you still needed a .edu email address to sign up.

Because the economy collapsed in 2008, they printed money, handed it to the banks, and increased lending to maintain the illusion that the economy is fine.

Our economy isn't growing, we are simply borrowing money and continuing to spend in a consumer economy to maintain the illusion that our economy is actually functional. If they stopped lending money, and we had to pay back the debts, corporations, people and Governments would instantly go bankrupt.

This created a second problem, with Gold Bugs and Bitcoin. People realize that the economy is actually a debt bubble of have lost faith in the economy. If the desire to accumulate money loses it's appeal, people are no longer motivated by being financially successful.

Student loan is a perfect example. Students are so indebted, that it would be more cost effective to destabilize the economy than to work and pay off the debt.

Interesting, thanks. I *somewhat* understand the economics of it all, but something drastic happened during those two years and again I'm not alone when I say that it had nothing to do with economics or money. Something just changed.

Just because you feel that way, and because a lot of people feel that way, doesn't make it true. All it takes is a few charismatic figures saying that that was the case, a few anecdotes, and all of a sudden people jump on it. It builds momentum, it feels substantial, but that doesn't mean that it necessarily was substantial.

Things have been this shitty since the Clinton Administration anon, you just didn't have the means to see it until 2007-08 when the internet took off to learn about the world and understand how political corruption and globalism has steadily ruined it.

I don't think Clinton era globalism is malicious myself. I think they were trying to make the world a better place, tear down borders (like the Iron Curtain) and bring free trade and free travel for all people.

I think the mistake was doing that only in Western countries, and we just ended up with a flood of migrants and no one leaving for third world countries.

smartphone proliferation turned every woman into an instant liberal. Same thing happened for faggy beta-men.

It really was smartphones.

There's a reason why liberals love Steve Jobs so much, even while he looks like a normal no-consequence faggot/geek to most people (despite being rich of course).

The reason is that he got a smartphone into everyone's hands, and that's how people started reading news.

If you judged by online news, you'd think everyone who mattered was a liberal. This is precisely what all the followers thought (e.g. women, faggots, weaklings, etc) when they began reading news online. They didn't want to feel "left out" so they started spouting that bull shit too.

Simple fucking truth m80s.
>>
>>127801202
Basically this. Social media happened.
In the 1980s you went to people's houses and knocked on the door. Your friends were a circumstance of geography. Sometimes people weren't home. That was life. You did life. Then you had free time, so you went and saw the people you cared about. You vidya when it rained.
In the 1990s things remained the same for normies but the internet started becoming a thing for social outcasts. IRC culture. Not everybody could internet. The internet could be frustrating at times in fact. Instant messenging eventually became a thing... but even still.. socializing with people on the internet meant going out of your way to connect with people.

It started getting more popular in the 200X's and that was a good thing... until fucking Facebook came along.

Things have slowly degraded socially. You hand pick your acquaintances. Now adays you can go about your entire life without ever having to be exposed to other opinions.

And it's worse now because people don't even converse properly with their fucking acquaintances anymore. In the last couple of years conversations have died. People post everything on Facebook. There's no point in conversing with them anymore. Like your photo. Cool vacation bro. See you never.

People expect ideological homogeneity. The political implication of this is that everybody goes into politics with an absolutist mindset. Pragmatism is dead. It's all about grabbing the ball and running like hell now.
>>
Is Twitter seriously popular with normies? Honestly don't see how it could take off considering it seems utterly pointless unless you're a celebrity.
