This should get you started.

-Sometimes it's easier not to use the detection tool and just use a brush in an empty layer.
-Overlay isn't always the best setting.
-Some black and white pics have strong contrast which will look unnatural in colour pictures, just turn the contrast down.
-Not every colour layer needs to have the same opacity
-After you're done, convert it into a single layer and tweak around the vibrancy settings and the colour levels.

Some pictures work better than others.
Pic related is a great example of how good a colourised picture can look.
