>The ground-based interceptor launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California shortly after 3:30 p.m. EST Tuesday. The U.S. will launch an ICBM-class target from the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, 4,200 miles away. If successful, the kill vehicle, or intercept, will collide with the ICBM test target midcourse over the Pacific Ocean later today.

> Moments ago, it was confirmed that the test was a success.

Fox news also just confirmed it was successful.

Once again, the United States proves its superiority. Russia, China and Iran are shitting their pants now.
>>
The United States of America now has the ability to shoot down Russian, Chinese, North Korean, and Iranian ICBMs.

It feels good being the best.
>>

It was cloudy here but normally I can see Vandenberg launches, pretty cool stuff.
>>
>>127755736
Well, this test confirmed that we can attack ballistic missiles on the boost phase. It's a great advancement but we will eventually have to develop systems to defend against the warheads as well, that's where things get tricky.

But if you can attack the missile on boost you don't have to worry about shooting down 6-12 warheads and a couple dozen decoys, so it's a great start.
>>
don't forget to gift the technology to Israel ASAP you ungrateful goym
>>
>>127756001

It's Revolutionary. Now that we know we can do it, we can perfect it and only make it better.

This gives us a major advantage over every other nation on earth.

They probably helped us make it, haha. Those Kikes are smart.

> (Reuters) - The U.S. military said on Tuesday it had staged a successful, first-ever missile defense test involving a simulated attack by an intercontinental ballistic missile, as concerns mount over North Korea's advancing missile and nuclear program.

> "The intercept of a complex, threat-representative ICBM target is an incredible accomplishment ... a critical milestone for this program," Vice Admiral Jim Syring, the director of the Missile Defense Agency, said in a statement.

So let's say we get a 10 year window where we'd escape the normal pitfalls of a MAD situation akin to being able to "win" a large thermonuclear exchange? What then? Do we just combine forces with Russia to delete china? holocaust asians? Would anyone even care if we did? Who would miss the orientals?

And before you think i'm crazy or larping - when the eventual worldwide nuclear war happens and both sides (or all 3) are rendered uninhabitable and humanity faces an extinction event - wouldn't it have just been better to choose for White/European/Slavic races to win instead of everybody dying? This planet isn't big enough for all the current races and we know that this will happen. So why not take bold action when this becomes viable?

I cannot even begin to stress how hard it is to intercept an ICBM. Many compare it to threading a needle 10,000 feet in the air.

Never felt so patriotic before.
>>
>>127756956

I doubt we could ever convince Russia or China to side with us and go against the other. Both nations realize that without one another, the US would be able to have complete global dominance, even more so than we already do.

Also no one wants nuclear war except Kim. China and Russia don't want it because they know it's a suicide mission. So I would be surprised of China stepped up and took control of DPRK and delt with Kim because if not, we will.

So you'd just ignore the brief window of opportunity? Imagine if america had acted against the soviets in china/ussr in '45 with an offensive nuclear war... we would have a white world right now.

This is a once in a generation advantage we should capitalize on.

In the 1950s, a series of anti-aircraft missiles were developed as part of Project Nike. The latest in the series, Nike-Zeus, offered extremely long-range interception and very high performance. In the late 1950s, the program investigated the use of Nike-Zeus missiles as interceptors against Soviet ICBMs. A Nike warhead would be detonated at high altitudes (over 100km, or 60 statute miles) above the polar regions in the near vicinity of an incoming Soviet missile.

nuclear winter occurs when the sum total of all Black Carbon in the atmosphere blocks the sun.

For instance the Icelandic Volcano that shut down European air traffic for a week was 0.5Tg of BC. Mount Saint Helen eruption was around 10Tg of BC. An exchange of 4,000 nukes of megaton variety would end crop production for a few decades probably-or at least shorten the growing season in places like iowa/eurasia wheat harvests to say a single month. It'd be devastating.

Assuming interceptor speed of mach 5, speed of sound 343 m/s and a boost phase time of 5 minutes and the test launch from the Marshall islands with interceptor launch in california.
You would need to launch the interceptor 1.52 hours before icbm launch to hit the missile in boost phase.

using a nuke to take out incoming nukes is EZ, this test was using a non-nuclear warhead (actually a kinetic kill vehicle ie just ramming the incoming warhead.... which is problematic for a number of reasons

https://twitter.com/Cirincione/status/869619202239467520

good tweet chain on the subject

anyhow, this test means precisely nothing. This was done in the best possible conditions, with a missile flying on a totally predictable path, all the time in the world to do calculations, closer range and most importantly the incoming missile is using precisely 0 countermeasures. Against the most primitive nork ICBM it MIGHT work but assuming they continue their development and figure out any sort of the number of easy to make missile defense countermeasures like decoy warheads this shit will be USELESS. It will have to function 10 times in a row in the best conditions to stop a single MIRV of which the Chinese and Russians have hundreds of. Their far more advanced countermeasures will make this even more pointless because it will never operate under such perfect conditions

tl,dr missile defense is a meme don't fall for it
>>
>>127755571
Also Russia had ICBM interceptor for more than a decade and there are ultra-sound delivery vehicles now.

Good job US you eliminated this era of peace brought on by nuclear weapons. I knew it had to happen some day though. I just expected to be 50 or something when ww3 began. Now it's fucking go time and you don't realize exactly what you've done. You should have developed this in secret.

Fucking US is like a dog chasing a car. You have the bumper now and the only thought that registers is "oh boy oh boy oh boy" over and over again.

>Posting Zeus
>Not Sprint

>Sprint went from 0 to Mach 10 BEFORE IT LEFT THE SILO

>The conical Sprint was stored in and launched from a silo. To make the launch as quick as possible, the cover was blown off the silo by explosive charges; then the missile was ejected by an explosive-driven piston. As the missile cleared the silo, the first stage fired and the missile was tilted toward its target. The first stage was exhausted after only 1.2 seconds, but produced 650,000 lbf (2,900 kN) of thrust. On separation of the spent first stage, it disintegrated due to aerodynamic forces. The second stage fired within 1 – 2 seconds of launch. Interception at an altitude of one to eighteen miles altitude (1.5 to 30 km) took at most 15 seconds.

Granted, it was for point defense unlike Zeus, but it was still damn impressive. It was meant to use an enhanced radiation nuke to destroy incoming RVs, but in testing it ended up doing at least one kinetic kill by accident.

http://thebulletin.org/how-us-nuclear-force-modernization-undermining-strategic-stability-burst-height-compensating-super10578

>Assuming that the 506 deployed W76-1s equipped with the super-fuze were used against Russian silo-based ICBMs, essentially all 136 Russian silo-based ICBMs could be potentially eliminated by attacking each silo with two W76-1 warheads—a total of 272 warheads. This would consume only 54 percent of the deployed W76-1 warheads, leaving roughly 234 of the 500 warheads free to be targeted on yet other installations.

> In all, the entire Russian silo-based forces could potentially be destroyed while leaving the US with 79 percent of its ballistic missile warheads unused.

> One such mission would likely involve the destruction of road-mobile ICBMs that had left their garrisons to hide in Russia’s vast forests in anticipation of attack. The garrisons and their support facilities would probably be destroyed quickly, and some of the dispersed road-mobile launchers would also be quickly destroyed as they were in the process of dispersing. To destroy or expose the remaining launchers, United States planners would have the nuclear forces needed to undertake truly scorched-earth tactics: Just 125 US Minuteman III warheads could set fire to some 8,000 square miles of forest area where the road-mobile missiles are most likely to be deployed.

>Such a “warfighting attack” would likely begin with the detonation of a nuclear warhead in front of key early-warning radars. An explosion of a 455 kiloton Trident II warhead at an altitude of 1,300 to 1,400 kilometers would create an area of radar “blackout” that would prevent all Russian radars looking toward the United States and into the northern parts of the North Atlantic from observing US ballistic missiles as they rose over the radar horizon.

Winning a nuclear exchange was always possible ever since SLBMs and DT shots became a thing.

The goal behind a legitimate ICBM defense isn't even to stop all missiles that come in. It's to add uncertainty to any RV to actually hit its target, let alone destroy it. This then requires you to increase the number of RVs per target to better ensure destruction, meaning you have less targets you can then hit.

To give a brief example - lets assume that right now a RV has a 100% to hit and destroy its target. So now GBI comes in, and lets say it only has at best a 50% chance of intercepting a single target.

You've got 100 targets and 100 RVs.You don't know which RV will be struck or if any will. But to be on the safe side, you now have to decide which of those 100 targets MUST be destroyed. So you then have to allocate an additional warhead to those targets. Each warhead you add to that priority target is now no longer able to strike the another. So for example, 50 of those targets absolutely, positively must be destroyed, that means the other 50 you originally targeted are now spared.

Now the real threat is "What if one of these missiles strikes a MIRV bus before it releases its warheads? It has just taken out MULTIPLE warheads with a single shot, meaning I now have to alter my target selection and warhead usage even more!"

With very little comparative resources, the nation with a viable ICBM defense has just taken a large chunk out of their adversaries usable warhead total. THAT is the true power of an ICBM defense.

The system works by taking a holographic scan of of the target along with surrounding atmosphere then making a standing wave to heat up the air dispersing the water vapor.

But the technology is real and very very effective.

Advanced cruise missiles like APCM-NAVY-NSCC17 or APCM-NAVY-NSCC500-B. The survivability of an advanced plasma cruise missile after it is launched does not depend anymore on the interval between the time that enemy air defense systems detect its presence and the time it takes for the cruise missile to arrive at its designated target. First, the enemy cannot detect the APCM* by conventional means; second, its speed in excess of Mach 26 makes its interception simply impossible. A stealthy APCM-NAVY-NSCC17 craft has a radar cross section of -120 dB, therefore once the APC missile is launched it would be detected less than fifteen seconds before it arrived at the target.

Ok, just looked it up and the concept will do nothing to help laser warfare.

See, there's a net amount of energy you have to put into a laser so it can heat a shell's explosives, let alone a rotating ICBM/Warhead Payload.
How you phase the laser's beam so it arrives focused on the target is irrelevant.

You still have to beam it through water vapor. You have to heat up something that's not the missile. Currently, laser weapons need mini power plants to take down mortar shells.
Orbital ICBMs is a whole different matter.

>>127768817
They're currently all research projects and hopeful projections. The working railguns we have now need small powerplants, massive capacitor banks, and huge amounts of maintenence just to function well enough for the next shot.

Again, nukes are the best weapons know to man. No need to reinvent the wheel, we've already got the best shit in town.

They actually have a bit more strategic warheads than the US, yet the US has more tactical warheads.

It's an interesting concession made because of how strategic and tactical warheads are counted in treaties. Heavy bombers like the B-2 and B-52 each count as a strategic warhead as they can be loaded with over a dozen tactical warheads at once. The US also has a substantially larger bomber force, so in the end both sides thought they got something out of the deal - the Russians got the MX Peacekeeper off the field along with fewer bombers to deal with, and the US gutted Russian TBM and ICBM fleets compared to their peaks in the 80s.

That assumes we initiate nuclear war, which won't happen.
Geographically, Russia is far enough that any interceptors we launch won't get to their delivery vehicles on time to intercept the warhead cluster.

But let's say they could. Then, all the Russians have to do is split the nukes earlier in flight and maybe strap a small booster on to compensate. Cheap solution to an expensive countermeasure.
