Two belligerents can fight the same war for different reasons. Also, it helps to note the differences in rationale between the leadership of those belligerent actors and the common man.

The south seceded and fought over the issue of slavery. The north prosecuted the war in order to quell a rebellion, not because they hated slavery and were so nice.

Also freeing the slaves did nothing to keep blacks from being forcibly put to work.

They made up a bunch of stupid laws to sweep them into the cracks, and then in jail they were forced to do even worse than they did prior. I mean this was set up Right After the end of the war.
