Nazi Germany did that. They knew Stalin was planning to invade and take Europe while the iron was hot, so the Nazis went on the offensive with Barbarossa. The Soviets were ready to launch an offensive, but the Nazis put them on defense.

The Soviets ultimately came out on the winning side of the war overall, but the opportunity never quite presented itself again. Nazi Germany unironically saved Europe, and by extension perhaps the world, from falling to Communism. They did more for the betterment of Europe and the Western world than any of the Allies did.
