Seriously, I make 17$ and barely survive in my 1 bedroom after bills and groceries. I don't even know how people do it on 11$

They must have roomates or something to split the difference. Apparently Ontario has the highest cable/internet/phone bills in the entire world.
>>
>>127723064
The price of goods is going to go up with the increased minimum wage. So your $17 is going to become like $12 or $13. It sucks but it's going to be harder to live off what you make without a raise.
>>
Wynne literally did nothing wrong.
>>
>>127723064
Then don't get cable/internet/phone. Get a tracphone or what ever it is you get in Cananada.

I was making $12/hr. I didn't have internet, I didn't have TV, I didn't have a phone. I went elsewhere for entertainment and barely even stayed home. Now I make $25/hr and can enjoy those things. When you're not making good money, you have to cut out the bullshit in your life and deal with it.

That's what makes it a good place. We can get a better reading on whether it tips them further down the hole or tips them away from the abyss.

Unlike trying UBI in Finland, where they're already highly socialist and not in terrible shape, so UBI would have to really crash and burn hard there to get a good reading on it.

hey faggots, see ontario for the last 14 years and how it voted? this will be canada in its entirety for the next 10. the country will have to be literally in flames before trudeau goes because canada is and has been primarily a left wing cuck nation for most of its existence.

Pay people more money to do the same job.
Your labor is not worth any more than it was so the money must be worth less.

Minimum wage jobs are not for raising a family, it's for supplementing an existing income. Perfect for retired people, a housewife who's children have grown, or students that have thier needs taken care of and need beer and gas money.

Put the money and effort into creating middle class jobs where labor is worth the increased wage due to difficulty, skill and or responsibility.

Doesn't even think how that impacts salaries of trainers, team leads or lower management and what that means for keeping talent in small business settings. Cashier gets raise, then higher staff wants raise because they do more work. If boss can't pay they leave (hopefully) to find another job that will.

Also not all businesses operate at a profit their first few years. You're not only making it harder for newbies to get a job, but also new businesses to get a start.

Throw in a push for automation or higher skilled people and you've just increased a greater divide between lower and upper classes.

A strong middle class cannot be created out of magic money and government mandates.

They don't want small business to exist anymore in Canada didn't you know? They only tailor their legislation to the BIG BAD CORPORATIONS like Timmies and Walmart, while simultaneously the cities and government are giving out contracts to Timmies and Walmart. For example, there are maybe a couple restaurants/pit stops not owned by a multinational chain along the entire 600km highway up to Sudbury, it's all Tims/BurgerKing/PizzaPizaa/Etc. They pay the government not to allow anyone else to set up shop along the highway.

It needs to be decreased to 5 dollars. You see... these people don't consider work inflation to be a thing. The truth of it is that the same amount of minimum wage labor work today is worth less than 20-30 years ago as technology becomes better and with the population growth being as large as it is.

Its ignoring correlation with causation. In the boomer era a guy with an 8th grade education could get a job that paid equivalent of $20 an hour in todays money bolting cars together on an assembly line.

Minimum wage was still about equivalent to what it is today (around $8.00 an hour). Industry wasnt better because wages were high, wages were high because industry was better. The service "industry" was never and can never support an economy. Wages are stagnant in the west because the industrial field is stagnant in the west.

Artificially declaring a frycook or a cashier to be worth what a guy boring out engine blocks is worth will not change this basic fact. You can artificially raise the wages all you want, if you arent doing so due to real improvements in the economy then its just devaluing the currency.

Which, by the way, is what its really all about. Countries like china with command economies intentionally devalue their currency every time their debts get too much by simply declaring them to be so. This $15 an hour minimum wage idea is literally just a defacto way for the debt heavy western nations with free market economies to do the same.

The pet economists and statisticians on leashes will crow that now nobody is making less than $50,000 a year an since poverty is officially set st $20,000 a year that means the glorious blue overlords finally managed to oblitorate poverty!

Meanwhile a loaf of bread will cost $20 and buisinesses will be replacing humans with robots. The chocolate ration has been increased from 30 to 25 grams, 2+2=5, big brother is watching, and hail oceania.

Its all bullshit.

Do you work 5 hours a week? You'd be making ~$2300 a month, which is good.

Even if you lived in Toronto, you can rent a room in a house and the rent is only ~$700-900 with utilities.

That leaves you over 1300 for groceries and everything else. If you're from Toronto, you don't need a car because the subway/transit is phenomenal.

If you eat anywhere near $1,000 stop being an obese retard and eat properly.

If you aren't eating more than $400 a month you should have more than enough money to do whatever the fuck you wanted.

Cost to produce said supply increases

Prices go up

How do you expect the supply of perishables like food to maintain themselves? You know that factories/businesses are continuously producing goods?

The only way around this is to import more goods- meaning you'll lose jobs opposed to increasing the value of a product; but even then, the domestic supplies price will increase and the foreign will increase the cost of theirs

OR

People have more money, buy more goods, the demand for a supply increased, thus the value increases

Yeah, I'm aware. If you made $17/hr 40 hours a week you'd be making ~$2,850 a month

I took off a generous $550 for taxes, might be a little more- but my point stays the same.

At bare minimum, lets say you don't work 40 hours a week, and get raped by taxes. You get $2,000 a month.

$800 is a pretty good middle ground for an apartment in Toronto, so we're using the most expensive medium for this

Don't be an obese sack of shit and eat $1,000 worth of food, normal bachelors spend ~$200-400 a month on food

Lets say $500 to exaggerate it

SO

Rent and food: $1300

Lets say $200 for razors, shampoo, soap, and all that other shit...you wouldn't spend that much, let alone every month, but we're exaggerating costs to prove a point.

Rent, Food, "Necessities": $1,500

How can you not afford to live at this point, when you have $500 left over?

People who can't afford to live on min wage are either living in a hellhole like California where a shack is 1,000,000, or they are either too lazy to work enough hours, or just work in a hellhole where they can't work enough hours.

One of those things is just the person in question being a piece of shit. The other two necessitates a relocation.

I have seen people in my job, struggling, and i tell them to do exactly what i do (I live even cheaper now than I used to, in a good place, making more money,) and whenever I tell them how you actually do have to work and make sacrifices, they just whine and complain about how 'yeah but what about my life? or my hobbies?'

>frozen chicken breast

>750 calories/lb
>3,750 calories for the bag, /fit/ approved because of the protein value

Depending on your height, that's enough, ~100 off from your daily caloric intake for 2 days

Meaning you just spent $4 for food per day; if that's all you ate you'd spend $120 on food a month

Ground beef is also relatively cheap and high in calories

A bag of beans is $10, and those things are hardy as fuck and can hold you off for a week

Rice is also very hardy and inexpensive

10lb of potatoes is $4

77 calories per 100g is 346.5 calories per pound, * 10 = 3,465

Which is only ~500 calories off from sustaining your weight for 2 days, once again; however, this time it's $2 a day

Pasta is ~$1.50 for a bag, $2 for sauce and there's enough carbs/calories to maintain you for 2 days

The key is mixing the meats with inexpensive sides such as potatoes, beans, rice, and the like. You can very, VERY easily spend under $100 a month

I probably spend ~$150 on food, and ~$100 on shit to spice of my meals like broccoli, spinach, spices, sauces

But it's all extremely inexpensive- people are just fat fucks that eat too much and don't know how to manage their money

Further inflation is a possible outcome of this, but it will almost certainly result in the collapse of whatever manufacturing jobs still remain in this province. Businesses will lay off current low-skilled employees, relying instead on an investment in capital (including automation and self-serve options), and overtime for remaining employees. These goddamned millennials will end up at mom's house or will become forever indentured to the Liberal party by remaining on the dole, resulting in higher taxes and a further flight of investment to more business-friendly jurisdictions, continuing a trend which accelerated due to skyrocketing Hydro prices in this province. Checked.
What your saying is true but that doesn't mean the stuff happen in the past isn't affecting the current year.
Unemployment is ridiculous high and college degrees are being vastly devalued since they allow idiots to still pass.
The older generation blaming the current is just as bad as vice versa.
However I see a lot of the older generation trying to help the younger as well and many admit it's getting worse than before.
So instead of playing the blame game, can we pull ourselves out of this shithole and make a better life is the real question,
or is the economy to far gone to be saved.

$15 would match inflation. People do not seem to understand that they have been getting jewed since the 60ies or 70ies with a terrible fucking minimum wage that does not increase as the cost of goods continues to skyrocket.

Ontario is one of the most expensive places to live IN THE WORLD, and my idiot countrymen are too busy shilling for their multi-billion dollar companies or getting pissy about social justice to remove their heads from their anus and realize this isn't sustainable.

Not only that, big companies just higher 15 people to work 4 hours a week and then don't pay any benefits to any of them, because they're all part time and aren't entitled to any.

Then again, economics, money-sense or anything regarding how to function as an adult are not mandatory courses (if they're even offered), so it isn't surprising things are the way they are here.

50 year olds living in their 80 year old parent's place with their 20something kids all making $10 an hour still, meanwhile inflation continues to increase.

No because these people probably pay a negligible amount of income tax to begin with.

But it WILL result in the government paying out less from the earned income tax credit (we have negative income tax in canada for low earners)

so its good for the governments budget. it essentially transfers some of the burden of helping low income workers from the govt to corporations

You need to actually look at the data instead of all these retardedly oversimplified made up hypotheticals.

Unemployment in seattle is far lower than the national average and more people are getting jobs since the minimum wage was raised to $15.

No business owners there are starving or moving away.
>>
>>127722672
I think the answer is simple; reduce government waste (and involvement) and reduce taxes.

The government manages our money, they have no money of their own.

Eliminate the IRS with a national sales tax. Maybe no tax on food items. You only pay tax when you buy a pencil, a boat, a mansion, etc.
>>
>Minimum wage increases
>Shitty jobs will treat employees worse than they already do
>Price of goods increases
>More entry level jobs automate
I don't know why they think raising the minimum wage by such a drastic amount is a magical cure all.
>>
>>127722672
Raising minimum wage is destructive to 1st time employees. It forces businesses to take only workers who have skills and experience by robbing new workers of their only bargaining tool.

A new worker with no experience might say to a business - you're paying your workers $11 / hour. I'll work for $8 / hour.
That way the business saves on wages and the employee gains vital skills and workplace experience which he can use to negotiate a better contract in the following years.

"No, the minimum wage isn't forcing these Seattle restaurants to close"

That doesn't mean that the minimum wage increase won't make the Seattle restaurant business harder. But so far it doesn't seem to have made a dent in diners' choices.

MY SIDES. What kind of jobs do you think exist near places with housing that cheap? Are you asking people to live on a native reserve in the tundra, because thats about it as far as housing that cheap goes.

>goes to overly expensive college before saving up

Okay sure, they'll just save up $40k on $10 an hour while trying to feed themselves, pay for their car, pay their bills. And "overly expensive" lmao do you even know what you're talking about? Nobody is going to hire some retard with a degree from a borderline fake online college, and that is the only affordable post-secondary out there.

>thinks everything is supposed to happen in his favor asap

The irony being your generation refuses to accept that you took a giant shit all over virtually every facet of society and continues to throw an entitled tantrum even though you'll only have to deal with the BEGINNING of your mess

Of course it isn't your fault, you only repeatedly voted for them

>has never walked into a place that's hiring to personally hand them a resume - it works sometimes even in [current year]

That works sometimes in minimum wage jobs. You can't walk into a place with a meaningful career path and hand your resume to a secretary as if they give a shit.

A) citation needed
B) Yes seattle is expensive, but so are other cities such as New York (low minimum wage) and Hong Kong (non-existant minimum wage). the burden of proof is on you to show things have become drastically more expensive BECAUSE this minimum wage hike implemented in 2015. you cant do it.
C. The exception? The overwhelming consensus amoung economists is that small pertubations in the minimum wage (of say a dollar or two) and no large effects on unemployment and increase living standards of the poor.
