Main streets include Irving Park (horizontal) which is mostly safe day and night. Just don't go near or beyond the Irving Blue Line or the Kennedy Expressway at night unless your life depends on it, drug deals and vagrants happen and lurk there. Over by Lakeview there's mostly roving drunks, but you're safe. Towards the lake there's homeless people but you aren't in terrible danger.
Ashland is fine provided you aren't by Roger's park of the south branch. The city's North and South sides are divided by river branches, which aren't hard to map out. A simpler rule of thumb is downtown is central, above is north, below south. You should stay away from Western more south and don't bother with California unless you're close to Irving Park, otherwise you risk going to Humboldt Park. Crime happens everywhere here but the South and West sides are where the fucked up shit you're hearing happens. Really you should take time to look into Chicago neighborhoods over streets, because shit changes in a heartbeat from one street to another.

You're welcome, as an added bonus: Safest train line is Brown, it goes to downtown then loops around back to the Northwest Side. Purple Line is Mostly Safe but be wary, it cuts off near Rogers Park. Red Line has a very bad reputation when it goes South of the downtown loop and will quickly get really fucking sketchy, especially by 75th and Cottage Grove. Going North it's mostly safe aside from a few terrifying stations by Rogers Park. Green Line trains are sketchier the further West, as do Blue. The Blue Line has seen a spike in crime, and many people fall prey to getting off at the wrong side near the expressway by UIC. I haven't heard much about Pink, and you only need to Orange to get to Midway airport. Speaking of Midway, only go for the airport, it's Latin Kings territory.

I wouldn't trust it, there's a lot of gangs and gang territories missing. For starters the gentrifying/mostly safe areas I listed actually all have gangs but on this map they aren't all listed. A better one is actually the one in the OP. You're better off looking at the chicago gangs wikipedia page, and looking at internet headlines for them to find out how bad one is. Usually Latin Kings, Gangster Disciples, and Black Disciples are heavily feared, but there's plenty of other gangs scattered about. You only really have to worry about gangs on the South and West Sides, most of the north side and central area isn't that plagued by them.
