Humor is a courting ritual and from a historic and evolutionary standpoint males are the pursuers among homo sapiens. When women are funny it intimidates other women because they instinctively assume she is trying to steal their mate or potential mates.

When women are in a group made up entirely of women, it's fine, they will make jokes and laugh with each other. But next time you're in a group with mixed genders watch how the dynamic shifts. If you know a woman who is genuinely funny, observe other women when she makes a joke which causes men to laugh. She might laugh, but she'll also have that look of "I can't believe you just said that" on her face, even if the joke wasn't in any way offensive.

Hitchens has an awesome video where he explains this, basically, Darwinian evolution never necessitated humor to make women "fit" to reproduce. Women just have less reason to be attractive in the form of humor to pass on genes so it just died. Kinda why men aren't as emotionally expressive as women, it doesn't helpvmen to be very emotional when trying to find a partner usually.
